I have never had a problem with Mary Sues. 99 percent of fic is creating something you want to see/like to think about/enjoy/so on and so why are Mary Sue fics so bad? We get crushes, we have fantasies, why not write them out/have someone write one for you?

I just don't think they should be thrown in with regular fic (best to remain private between fandom friends or their on site).

Yeah, I don't think there's nothing wrong in them per se. In fact, I think that it's a usual and maybe necessary step when you're starting to write fiction. But Mary-Sues are usually boring. When a character is too perfect and all the other characters are just there as reflections of the MS/GS, it isn't very interesting.

I agree, they are not interesting except to the people that write/have someone write one for them, lol. But I just find them normal litle fantasy pushers and don't see anything wrong with them. :)

Completely agree. I enjoy my own with two good friends, and it's perfect. No way would I put it up online.

What people complain about is when the writers DO put them up online and expect people to love them for it / get pissed when someone critiques them.

I don't think anybody can reasonably complain about the existence of Mary Sues in private. If they're private, the internet doesn't even know they exist.
Some people have a wild hare up their ass about people having immersive rather than voyeuristic fantasies, and people do hate an awful lot on Sues (like EWW SUES UUUGHHHH BURNING SCOURGE OF THE EARTH SEND IT TO HELL), but I think majority of complaining is about posted Suefic and not about private stuff.

I have a problem with Mary Sues, I've always found them to be incredibly self-centered and disrespectful to the original characters.

They're not about you jumping into your favourite universe and having fun with your favourite characters (something which shouldn't be posted online anyway, since the only person that's interesting to is you). Mary Sue is about taking over their favourite universe, about being the center of everyone's attention without question, and showing off how much better they are then everyone else, even these great characters that they love are not as good as them. It is the most purile type of fantasy, the one that robs everyone else of their...their person-ness, and turns them into lesser things that exist only to serve you.

That is why I don't like Mary Sues

I think we all have thought about being another character and getting the one you love, beating the bad guys, etcetera. That's pretty normal, I guess.

But let's make it clear: no one cares about other people fantasies about them being in love with X character and saving the world together. Well, let's say a few people care.

Keep it to yourself or your friends or just face the reviews people sent to you. You're publishing in a public page where everyone is able to read your story, if they don't like your character or story they're free to tell you. If you want everyone to love your Sue... go to your own blog and invite your friends to daydream together.

I think writing about a Sue and expect everyone to love her is like uploading a story with words that only you and your friends use and expect everyone to understand it and like it. Not real.


I can only see Sue as the bad character we all make while being a child that always won and save the world and all. That's normal, we were kids. I think we should know better than that already...

Even if you want to put some of your dreams in a story there're lots of ways to do it while you make a story that makes sense and doesn't exist only for you to make out with X.

That's my opinion, at least!

EDIT: Writing is more than just put yourself paired with X.

I think people is forgetting the use of Fanfiction.
