I'm not sure I agree that Mary Sues can't exist in original fiction, but I do think the phrase gets thrown about too much.

Oh they utterly can be since the most famous is Eugene Wesley Roddenberry's side character who constantly steals the spotlight when the main characters grab onto the idiotball like it's made of candy. I think the OP isn't making a distinction between "Gee, Harry Potter, and Doctor (Who) and House are all the most important character in the show named after him, hur hur they're Sues" stupidity, and when a side character is suddenly introduced or becomes better than the main character.

I just came here to bring up Wesley Crusher, who Roddenberry even admitted was a self-insert character.

I made the secret to be short and not having me babbling during 20minutes, but I agree with you. I don't say it's completely impossible, but people say it too often and since it's a fandom term, I would prefer it to stay there. Personal opinion ;)
