The new multi-racial Spidey. :3

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
In Ultimate Spider-man peter Parker died and is getting replaced by Miles Morales ^there, he's half black, half Hispanic. I'm thinking of getting it to.

Ooh..! How did Miles pick up the spider stuff?

I now need to go to my LCBS!

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ultimate Spidey was recently killed by Osborn and the boy who's taking his place until around when the next movie comes out is half-black and half-Latino. A lot of people are in a fuss because, well.. he's mixed-race, when it shouldn't actually matter as long as the story is good.

I mean, Glenn Beck went as far as to be all, 'THIS IS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF OBAMA!!!!11`2' and it would be funny if it wasn's so sad that people are having a hard time accepting this kid when the first issue isn't even out yet.

until around when the next movie comes out

What do you mean by this? I don't follow Marvel Comics very much, so I don't really know about how they run, but are they bringing back Peter Parker next year when the new movie comes out?

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
There are two continuities within the Marvelverse, and one is the Ultimates, which started in something like 2001. In Ultimatesverse, they bring in a lot of characters that don't really mesh in the main continuity (Luke Cage, who is awesome, being a pretty prominent example, and this is where the Samuel L. Jackson-looking Nick Fury first showed up) and also include most of the heroes from the movies. The whole thing is more 'contemporary,' if you will, and a lot of the time when a movie comes out they start to draw the characters like their movie counterparts (Ultimate Iron Man looks a LOT like RDJ, for example) and sometimes throw in events from the movies.

So the plan, or so I've heard, is to reintroduce Peter Parker around the time the new movie comes out so his story can probably follow some of the film's events.. although I'm not entirely sure how, because the new movie is a reboot? Either way, when he does come back he'll probably wind up looking a lot more like Andrew Garfield. :3

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was vaguely aware of what the Ultimates are, but I think I understand them better now. I wish this was what DC was doing if they wanted to bring in new readers, not some reboot that'll probably fail anyways.

I adore Andrew and all, but it's a shame that they are bringing in this new character just for a year. Is it likely that he'd continue as a hero under a different name?

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's a trend they have going right now. Once the Captain America movie came out, Steve Roger's replacement got killed and he went back being Cap (before he was just Steve Rogers being heroic after he came back from the dead.)

When Iron Man came out, Tony was very, very morally compromised after Civil War, after the movie they started making him more heroic and finally just reset him.

Over in DC, Bruce and Dick were both Batman, but now that the new Nolan movie is coming out, it's back to just Bruce (though alot of it has to do with the reboot).

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I get it now! I thought Dick and Damien were a great team, so I kind of wish both Bruce and Dick were kept as Batman (though that's far from my main issues with the reboot xD). It's not like Nolan will ever do Robin anyways, so I don't think anyone looking Batman comics that are similar to the movies would get "Batman and Robin". DC, why are you so silly? xD

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, honestly? I'll have issues accepting anyone who is not Peter Parker. A character is not just a costume.

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that, but it's only Ultimate Spider Man, he's still alive and Peter in the regular universe and all of the other alternate universes Marvel has out. Not to mention he'll be back in a year or two.

Plus this story line is coming from Donald Glover's desire to play Spider Man, which was meet with approval and enthusiasm by Ultimate Spider Man's writer.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that...I guess I'll just, wait it out? I don't see the appeal of an alternate Spiderman, for me. I'll probably not buy the comics - might give the movie a shot if it looks decent, eventually. To be honest I've been out of touch since even before the whole Mary Jane marriage retcon, and it's probably better that way.

[identity profile] punishermax.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand on some level this idea, but the passing of the torch has been done twice already in amazing ways. Bucky beign Captain America was fucking amazing and it was a god damn shame when he was taken away from it, and Dick Grayson Batman was awesome.

The idea is that you allow the costume to be the symbol. You say a character is not simply a costume, but the costume itself symbolizes a lot. Spider-Man was always about a person who was struggling to do right in a world that constantly shit on them. Peter filled his role perfectly. He died yes but he died as a true hero and showed that he deserved his powers and that he was one of the greatest heroes of his age. The costume has now been passed to someone new. Someone who will be different, but who will symbolize the same ideals as the last hero.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I get the concept. What can I say...there are some characters you're invested in more than others. Within the universe, you could indeed say the costume is a symbol.Outside the universe, you can say that Marvel is using the symbolism of the costume to keep their merchandise safe while they're launching a new hero. Call me a cynic.

This kid might be all sort of great, but he'll never be Spiderman to me. I'd much rather they'd go for a new hero than that they'd recycle storylines ad nauseum until they completely destroy what the character originally was.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
This. After the Ultimatum (fraking Loeb) and deaths of many characters in Ultimate!Verse, Peter was the only one I was invested, and his death in The Death of Spider-Man upset so much.

See a complete stranger in the custome is sad for me, reminds of the horrible Clone Saga in the 90's.

I know Ultimate!Peter is not the original, and not the principal, but Amazing!Peter is such a dick since One More Day that I prefered his version in the Ultimate, the dork and adorable boy who is responsible and caring, and free of deal with demons.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
They might just bring him back, eventually. You never know with Marvel. But then that to me would be another of their major retcons and would make being invested in the story even harder.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a pretty bad retcon. Although in the Ultimate verse is more hard bring back a character, in special a hero (Daredevil, Strange, many X-Men, Thor, the Wasp...)

I should have prefered a retcon of Ultimate verse, a brand new day (wink, wink Quesada) that The Death of Spider-Man. With a complete retcon in Ultimate, Ultimatun and his fuckup would be erased.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Funny that you should mention Clone Saga- if they had gone with Ultimate!Jessica I don't think that there would be as much backlash as there has been.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I read Spider-Man for Peter Parker and his troubles, and I'm not about to waste my money on a new character.

[identity profile] judi42.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I read Spider-Man for Peter and his story, (and for my bitterness for the Peter in the universe 616). I feel his death was pointless, and invested me in other character in the costume, is not the same.

I preferred give the benefit of the doubt a Miles.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure Miles will be a good, well-rounded character, but money is tight and I don't want to throw any away on a character I'm not invested in. Peter (pre-OMD) and his supporting cast are some of my favorites in comics, but this Miles person came completely out of the left field. If it was already an established character taking up the mantle (though I disagree with the idea of Spider-Man as a legacy character in general, but whatever) that would be one thing, but clearly this is not the case.

I just wonder why the hell Marvel would think it would be a good idea to replace Peter after the clone saga fiasco. Haven't they learned their lesson from the reaction to Ben? The whole thing just feels, to me, like a big publicity stunt, because we all know that Peter will be inevitably back in the suit in some way by the time the movie rolls along.

So, Glen Beck really took the time to get into a frothing fit over a comic book character? Where did he spout this off anyway, I thought he got fired/quit his show.

He looks and sounds like a neat character, though.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately he still has a radio show. Even more unfortunate is the fact that people actually listen to it and believe what he's saying.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/08/03/glenn-beck-says-michelle-obama-responsible-for-new-spider-man-bendis-quesada-axel-alonso-respond/

Sigh. I want to punch him in his big dumb pasty face. SO BADLY.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well Glenn Beck's wrong. It's happening (partially?) because of Donald Glover :) which makes me immensely happy.
