While I will agree the Sue/Stu terms are dished out too often without the person understanding what they actually mean, a main character can easily be a Sue or Stu. Think of Twilight, or look up the Anita Blake books sometime. The main character Anita starts off as an awesome character and slowly changes into a power hungry sex fiend with like 20 boyfriends and no one ever calling her out on her bullshit (and when they rarely do it's hardly a big deal). A main character is one of the most important pieces of the story but when the world revolves around them without any sort of negative consequence for their bullshit, you know something's up.

I agree with this.

That "not being called on their bullshit" this is like the defining feature of a Sue for me. I remember trying to read the Anita Blake series, and as it progressed, it wasn't that she didn't have flaws—it was that everyone else acted like she was flawless. And the whole world seemed to fall in line with it, by almost always making her "right" in the end. Oh, was she being stupid and stubborn and mean to people around her for no reason? Well, her instincts were RIGHT, so-and-so is dangerous! So it's okay.

It's bad writing, and as overused as the term IS, it's useful to have a term that describes it.

I think the biggest issue with the more current Anita Blake series is the author decided to Suethor herself in it so deeply it messed everything up. Like Anita Blake's werewolf boyfriend? He allegedly represents her ex husband. Anita breaks up with him, and yet the author keeps dragging him into the story just to browbeat him some more for the issues she has with her ex in real life. It's really silly.

Although maybe there could be a new phrase for "canon Sue/Stu".

...and it makes me a little sad that I want such specific terminology.

Rejoice, anon. There is. And that is the exact phrase.
