I thought that a main character, by definition, cannot be a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Yet so many main characters get branded with that label. Did the definition change or am I just not remembering it correctly?

See my comment here. (http://fandomsecrets.livejournal.com/737005.html?thread=466835437#t466835437)

tl;dr version: none of the traits that make a Sue/Stu a Sue/Stu are exclusive to non-main characters, so it would be silly to say that a character bursting all over with Sue traits is a Sue unless they're the main character, in which case they're not.

I think it tends to start sliding over if you can't suspend your disbelief.

Like someone mentioned when Anita Blake gets 20 boyfriend and they all love her and have no problem with her sleeping around. It starts feeling more like author wish fulfillment than character/plot development.

I just think people are starting to realize these days that with bad writing no one's immune to the title. Main characters I believe just get away with more shit since the story in question is about them--but even so, there are main characters who just bend the will of everyone else in the story to theirs in an unbelievable way. Like Bella of Twilight: everyone for the most part in the series thinks she's awesome and she's never called out on any of the stupid or selfish things she does.

While it's rare, it's not impossible... particularly if the main character has no actual discernible flaws. Example: "Clumsy" is not a flaw in-and-of-itself. "Plain" is not a flaw. That kind of thing.
