I've never understood the problem people have with Mary Sue's. Sure, some of them can be pretty annoying, but so can canon characters. Even when it comes to the self-inserts. This last one bothers me especially for these reasons:

1. It's just fiction. Hell, it's not even being published or sold for profit. It's just something someone did in their spare time because they wanted to. Why should they be punished for having fun?

2. Who the hell hasn't fantasized about riding along in the backseat of the Winchester's Impala or staking vamps with Buffy and The Gang? It's completely normal to want to be a part of that world rather than always sitting on the outside peering in. Where's the harm in that?

3. Last but not least, IA with the OP that complains about claiming every character they don't like is a Mary Sue. I won't lie and say there aren't any in existence (I'm looking at you, Max Guevara), but sometimes the writer's just tend to come up with an annoying character. It doesn't automatically make them a Sue/Stu.

People just need to learn to loosen up and stop taking these things seriously.

The thing is that everybody loves their own Mary Sue, but doesn't want to read about other people's Mary Sues. Which I can understand. No, there is no harm in wanting to go on adventures with your favorite characters, but do we really want to read about everyone else having the same fantasy?

Total agree with 3. I'm sick of people labeling canon characters as Sues just because they don't like them.

Oh yeah, I can agree with that completely. It's the flaming I'm talking about. I don't get the hate. Why not just skip it and move on to the next without tearing that author down?

Most of us have probably fantasized about various fandom things. But those are personal fantasies. Sharing personal fantasies with the world is kind of strange and just a bit creepy. No one wants to know your personal fantasies. They are fine when they stay in your head, but when you share them with the world and expect everyone to love them, that is the problem. I want to fantasize about me in the Impala. I don't want to read about you in the Impala.
