Just from a marketing standpoint it seems crappy to pull a New Coke with him. I think it would have been better to do a story where Peter Parker was always Hispanic/Black and not introduce replacement Spiderman. You'd get a better idea of how many people are actually racist and how many are just upset that the character they loved was taken away.

This, well kinda. I figure like DC it's gonna go down where they kill off the whitey, replace him. Nostalgianerds whine they kill the new one and bring back the old one. I don't think it would matter nearly as much if he had started out that way in the Ult verse. There were so many other Minority Spider-mans that no one complained about because they were Alt-verse ones. Spider-man 2099. The Indian one.

I just really hate legacy characters that aren't allowed to stay dead or retired. It's just easier to keep the same one forever.

... randomly changing his race? That's much worse! firstly, it looks like they are jumping on the DC reboot bandwagon, secondly, that's more an example of new coke then this could ever be. Fan reaction would be overwhelmingly negative by both racist and old timers, and sorting them would be meaningless, company would still lose out.

Yes, but changing the race of a character have been done before in the Ultimate verse with Nick Fury (awesome FTW, Samuel L. Jackson is pretty badass.)

But in this universe, he was always that way. That was established when Ult universe was.

Changing it to "Peter parker was always black, lolz" now would not be like that at all.

I should have preferred a whole retcon of Ultimate verse. In fact, after Ultimatum and his WTFackery, a retcon should been perfect...

Agreed. I also think that a big part of the backlash is that this is a brand new character with no apparent ties to Peter or his friends. I doubt fans would have minded as much if the torch had been passed to Jessica, Ben, or even kicked off with the Ultimization of Miguel O'Hara.

Goddamn, this. Sadly I'd think this was completely awesome and have nearly all my misgivings if all they'd done was change this guys name to Miquel O'Hara.

They could avoid the whole "Miguels mom is a dirty, moronic whore" angle though this time around and I'd be fine with that. At least Aunt May didn't really know what she was getting into with Doc Ock
