While you probably could've worded it more delicately, I get where you come from. My high school was very much divided, and anyone who self-harmed was very socially isolated and would be ignored by anyone popular and/or 'normal'.

(Also, lol, at the people getting so offended. Yeah, people with mental issues deserve love too. But it's a matter of finding someone who puts up with your shit, and not scaring them off. It's not easy.)

Maybe my school was weird, but anyone who slit their wrists or self-harmed was automatically dumped into the "weird" group. Teens generally don't give a shit if someone is depressed or self-harming. It's just more ammunition to use against that person in the great, big climb up the social ladder.
