Congratulations, you've fallen into the exact same mindset that causes characters like Chidori to exist in the first place!

It's this disgusting thought process, this "people with mental illness don't deserve love/happiness/understanding", that causes mentally ill characters to be so two-dimensional, played for laughs or cheap drama. And I absolutely hate the way Atlus (doesn't) handle sensitive topics like this, but at least she had some tiny fragment of a personality, some role to play beyond showing off her bleeding hands in the background.

While you probably could've worded it more delicately, I get where you come from. My high school was very much divided, and anyone who self-harmed was very socially isolated and would be ignored by anyone popular and/or 'normal'.

(Also, lol, at the people getting so offended. Yeah, people with mental issues deserve love too. But it's a matter of finding someone who puts up with your shit, and not scaring them off. It's not easy.)
