In a similar vein, one of my biggest fanfic pet peeves is when a character is thinking something and then says it out loud without realizing that they said it. Like "He was looking at me strangely. I blushed when it occurred to me that I had spoken that last thought aloud." Sure, some people have much weaker brain-to-mouth filters than others, but I imagine it's more common to immediately be like "whoops, haha" than to not even know you had spoken until the other person reacted to it.

People are just far more self-aware than fanfic tropes often portray them. "He didn't realize that he had reached out until his finger was brushing his/her cheek." ...Really?
