This secret is amazing and says so many things I've had a hard time articulating perfectly. ILU for that. <3
A lot of it goes back to something I've seen thrown around here (and thrown around a few times myself): "When a Mary Sue is male we call him 'hero.'" But that's a more recent thing, I think, as Mary Sue has become such an overused term that it's lost all meaning.

Sometimes the whole "Mary Sue" thing is used as an excuse to put female characters on the sidelines.

I agree with you. I read both het and yaoi and when a girl is sweet, caring and pretty people will scream "SUE! D:", but if that's a guy, he would be "d'awwww *w*". What the fuck?

I agree that it's been overused to the point of loosing all meaning. Just look at this discussion, a lot of the people leaving comments don't seem to know what exactly a Mary Sue is.

I have the feeling that in fandom all ends up this way. At the beginning things like "Mary Sue", "Self Insert" or "Out of character" had a definition. Now everyone will be shouting them at every story they don't like, like that was a reason to make it look worse or something.

(Because I've never seen anyone calling X a Sue when they love the character... curious).
