I think main characters get branded 'Mary Sue!!!' when the work's creator starts getting inconsistent with characterisation, and especially when it happens only as a way to further the plot (like a character who's established as being really phyiscally strong and independant suddenly becoming a damsel in distress). If I look at it objectively, I think it'd be more appropriate to shout "POOR WRITING AND/OR CHARACTERISATION SKILLS!" rather than "MARY SUE!" :)

Mary Sue in an included character on a canon that isn't yours and where she gets all the atention.

Don't knowing how to write something is just bad skills!
