Hey OP, lifes too short in general to not have a big crazy adventure, you from 20 years from now will wish you'd gone on an adventure now. So make them happy. And in 20 years do your future self a favor and have another one!
Lifes only over when youre DEAD (and even then who knows)

I just went on a 230 mile hike with a group of wonderful people. Im 24, go GO FIND AN ADVENTURE! You gotta make one sometimes! Kitties with crescent moon shaped marks dont always hand them out!

[identity profile] ceylon-tae.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
This might be leaping to the worst possible conclusion, but given the circumstances in some parts of this planet, certainly, having an ordinary youth is a lot better than getting some sort of 'adventure' and then having it turn out badly. Riveting peril and dangerous adventure is, yeah, dangerous. I'd probably be grateful for the security of being 'ordinary' if you were allowed to do what you liked otherwise! Like go on adventures that probably won't kill you!

But I like that your smiley looks like he has beard-stubble.

OP

The thing is, I didn't have an ordinary youth, exactly. It even felt like if somebody I knew would have a wild adventure, it would be me. It just...never really turned out that way.

Oh. I'm sorry you feel like it kind of turned out disappointing, but... hm, that's an odd thing to hear. But feeling like there's missing is no fun. I wonder what will happen...

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I know the feeling. I have a strange jealousy towards my heroes because they were doing their own thing and saving the world at age 12 or something like that. And building them awesome fire-forged friendships. It's so silly but I can't help it :I

SO HEY

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
This probably isn't the right time to ask, but I got this here ring I'm supposed to deliver...

Keep Carl Fredricksen in mind.

[identity profile] tazthelemon.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
YESSSSSS.
Carl got more out of the adventure than Russel did, no doubt about it.
Sometimes an adventure later in life is better than having the same one earlier.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. Having had some of the real life equivalents of these adventures (illicit R&J relationship, going to boarding school in another country, riding across the Sinai desert on camelback, hiking across the moors in a ragtag bunch of nigh-strangers, sailing around the Hebrides...) they're either really un-fun and traumatic or they're just not all that exciting, especially once they're over.

I want magic cats and enchanted swords and lifelong nakama, damnit.

[identity profile] snarechan.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not all heroes had adventure packed lives at 10 or 14, though? Some don't get their chance until 20 or 30 or even 40+. They might even be more kickass this way because you're older and liable to figure out more creative ways to accomplish your goals, so consider yourself lucky that you still have the chance to find a journey worth investing in. YOU MIGHT EVEN BE ON ONE NOW AND NOT KNOW IT? Like in Pixar's Up.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Don't wait for adventure to come to you! You go to adventure! I'm planning for adventure, I'm about to start my first job and (very, very fortunately) I'm going to still be living with my mom while I'm going to community college, so my plan is to go to school and work for two years while saving all my money, and then the summer before I transfer to university I'm going to go travel internationally on my own. You should try and get your adventure before you become someone other people depend on, like a spouse or parent (though of course, you could always have them go with you), so hurry.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I did travel a fair bit. But these self-made adventures don't seem too...adventurous. And I'm totally not planning to be someone other people need to depend on. I'd just feel trapped.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha OP are you me?

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I used to worry about this, until I decided that - life *is* an adventure. It doesn't have to be running around with swords or possessing magic powers. Every single thing you do every day can be amazing. It's all in the mind. As long as you feel fulfilled, it doesn't matter what everyone else is doing. Don't compete with some unobtainable standard of adventure, OP. You're not an elf or a Timelord or a mutant (well, I suppose you might be a mutant, I don't actually know you). Whatever you're *not*, you *are* a You, so be the best You that you can be. That's the real adventure, and it never ends :D

(Anonymous) 2011-08-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder when will people like you stop using "normal", "ordinary" or any words like that like the whole world was just a huge hiveminded herd and you were the only black sheep who thought differently. No one is "ordinary". Every single person in this planet has a world of its own: not a single one is equal. There's no "normal" person. That idea is just used by the misadjusted just so they can feel unique and even superior.

And before anyone starts calling me a cynical asshole/troll/bitter person, no, I'm not saying who sould totally not go in an "adventure" if you ever want to. Fine by me. But quit thinking that just because most of the people you only know seem to be doing and thinking the same and you don't that makes you better or special.

Besides, I don't know what you're talking about. Spending most of your youth going to school and preparing your future? That IS a well spent youth.

inb4 people call me a troll just because they don't agree with me (like always)
