Something about being primarily concerned with your slashy OTPs over this matter strikes me as incredibly shallow, but I can't put my finger on it.

[identity profile] icarian-ink.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I understand how disappointing it can be when a song seems to fit a pairing perfectly and then something is thrown in that kills it. I also wouldn't restrict it to slash pairings - the sudden use of a gender term can also prevent a song from fitting a het pairing if you envisioned it as coming from the opposite person (God forbid a male singer voice the thoughts of a female character, and vice versa).

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
If it helps your borderline-homophobic mindset, I have the same problem with my het OTPs. I'll hear a song that describes how the guy thinks of the girl, but sung from by a female artist, and then she throws in a "boy" or a "him" somewhere.

I also have this problem with my f/f ships, and ships involving genderless characters.

lmfao holy shit, finding someone focusing on their OTPs instead of the music is not homophobic. Chill out.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
but didn't you know, homophobic now means any mention of heterosexuality anywhere ever?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Poor heteros :(

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying "oh poor heteros." I'm saying that acting like any mention of heterosexuality automatically = homophobia, or acting like the mere existence of songs about straight love affairs = homophobia, both diminishes the actuality of REAL homophobia aka treating gay people like crap b/c they are gay AND implies that only certain types of love should be expressed, which is a jerky thing to do, at least by those of us who don't think ANYONE should be treated like they're inferior because of who they happen to love. It's also a case of wayyyy overreacting to something that's not actually meant to imply anything like what's being read into it, but that's a fairly common thing on this comm.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. Very true.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
No, but snidely dismissing "slashy OTPs" instead of just "OTPs" is homophobic. You chill out.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
That NO U might have worked better if I was, you know, actually upset. I seriously have to disagree that going "lol slash fangirls" is in any way homophobic. Reacting [snidely] to fans of fictional gay men =/= one's actual response to REAL GAY PEOPLE.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I said, chill out.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
lol okay

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Take your own advice. The only one getting worked up about this is you.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, brother. No, it's not. Take a chill pill.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you just find anything with slash in it incredibly shallow

[identity profile] cold-river-blue.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Couldn't s/he have meant it would seem less shallow to also be upset about actual real life gay people having few mainstream songs that could apply to their relationships? Less relevant to this comm, maybe, but it would be the more generous reading of the comment.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I read the comment as, something along the lines of "you only care about gender politics and heteronormativity when it concerns your fandom pairings and that seems shallow."
Not that I necessarily agree - IMHO this is fandom secrets so I don't quite agree with getting all bent out of shape over focusing on the fandom side of things - but that's how I read the statement. However, if OP does only care about those things in regard to OTPs and doesn't care about them IRL then I agree it is shallow. But we don't have enough information to say.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
BINGO. This person has it.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
As compared to other 'shallow' reasons people like any song at all?

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
People liking songs for shallow reasons is hardly unusual or criminal, you know.
