I can sort of understand, but I generally listen to female singers who's love songs are about men, and ship m/m, so I don't have that problem? xD I don't think the use of "boy or "girl" is meant in a "no homo" way though, just that they thought it sounded good in that part of the song. I can get that it might be jarring when it occurs, but just ignore it, I guess? If it otherwise fits your OTP, then I don't think that one word will ruin it.

I'd be with you if this secret was more "man, I get irrationally disappointed when this happens because that song was so perfect, and I can't bring myself to ignore the gendered pronouns," because I get irrationally disappointed at that too sometimes.

But where you lost me was when you started talking about how the songs should be "neutral" and that the singers were worried that the songs might sound "gay." It's...well, it's what the writer/singer decided to do, and while it's fine to be a little irritated when it otherwise would have fit your OTP, music is expression.

You know what really grinds my gears? When they have "boys sing girl songs, girl sing boy songs" on idol shows and while the girls sometimes stick to the original lyrics, the boys will always choose to switch the gendered pronouns. But, actually, an abomination of this was when a guy sang Katy Perry's infamous "I kissed a girl."

He changed nothing else. Just that (and "those girls" instead of "us girls") ...

I hear you, OTP, but I too wouldn't restrict it to any particular gender or sexual orientation. Anything that sounds perfect and then isn't for some reason is disappointing. I don't think it necessarily loses its relevance completely and can still be meaningful.

And I have to disagree with people here saying music is expression and personal and whatnot. Some of it, some of the time, absolutely. But let's not pretend there isn't an aspect of commercializing most songs to make them appealing to a broad general audience, as well as some sort of censoring from producers, agents, radios, etc. It's naive to act like there's nothing affecting the lyrics except for what the musician wanted to say.

this is me but with numbers. i get that the some songs have dates that are extremely important to the artist, but sometimes it just goes wrong.

op you might like the song "i'm not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you" since it seems to be from the point of view of a girl who likes another girl but the singer is male :)

personally when i'm listening to music and thinking about my otps i am happy to ignore it when they say "girl" or "boy" lol. all that really matters is the overall meaning of the song. gender's not really important.

I get the feeling, but it's the artist's song, so it's not reasonable to expect them to change their personal experience to produce something genderless. Most of the time I manage to ignore the offending line, so it's no big deal

You know, chances are the song is written with someone in mind, or based on an experience of the singer/writer. It might be gender-neutral to you, but not tgo them, and they have every right to make the song about a boy/girl.

It bothers me too. More often than not, gendered pronouns will keep a song off a mix if they don't work. Ultimately, the musician wrote the song the way they wrote it and it's pointless to whine, but, at the same time... why not write it in a way that can apply to everyone? That's how I would do it.

Oh for crying out loud, really? Sorry OP but I don't think a lot of song writers' priorities involve their fans' OTPs. And if anyone thinks a song about a boy or a girl is not gender neutral and therefore homophobic, you're an idiot. End of story. Find another song to associate your OTP with and stop whining.

Jarring as the gendered pronouns maybe, since I do prefer it that songs avoid those, as long as the music is good and the singer is damned talented, I wouldn't be disappointed. There are plenty of other great songs out there. I'd keep looking. A good song is a good song on it's own.
