You know what really grinds my gears? When they have "boys sing girl songs, girl sing boy songs" on idol shows and while the girls sometimes stick to the original lyrics, the boys will always choose to switch the gendered pronouns. But, actually, an abomination of this was when a guy sang Katy Perry's infamous "I kissed a girl."

I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my girlfriend don't mind it

He changed nothing else. Just that (and "those girls" instead of "us girls") ...

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
...the worst part of this (for me) is that "i kissed a boy" sounds like it would be AWESOME

there's so much missed potential here :C

"bitches loved it."

Cobra Starship did a "I kissed a boy" song

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
ikr, that just sounds like it was...sad. A genderflip version of that song would've been awesome

(Anonymous) 2011-08-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all of this. Let's not pretend there's no "afraid to sound gay" going around while covering it up with "~but it's personal expression!~"

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
...Point, missing it much? (The singer, not you) The song is, at best, about bicurious experimentation (and, at worst, faux lesbian titillation for the audience). Keeping it as 'I kissed a girl' makes it from either of those into yet another song about cheating, only in this case, actually enjoying it. *rage*

Granted, it has a lot to do with society's attitudes, the whole 'girl on girl is hawt, guys kissing CANNOT BE ABIDED' thing, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it.

[identity profile] les-lenne.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the German audience, most probably didn't realize that he mutilated the song's meaning. I mean, whatever your take on the original song, turning it into a cutesy story about a boy cheating on his girlfriend and having a predominantly female audience applaud after the performance is hilarious. In a sad way.

(We get "My Happy Ending" as background music for reunion scenes of two lovers in German movies/tv series, for example, and not many seem to understand that that really doesn't fit, so nothing new there, I guess.)

There's an awesome cover by Temposhark you might like which is obviously meant to be about a gay guy singing about experimenting with girls. He sounds like he's having fun singing it, too :)

[identity profile] les-lenne.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Heeeh, thanks for the rec. He does sound like he's having fun indeed!

[identity profile] granular.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it! It makes me smile whenever I hear it :)

I remember that... and cringe ever damn time.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to bring this up, the way people will change the pronouns in cover songs...It annoys me a lot, because you get used to hearing it one way and somebody has to change it just so that it applies to their sexuality, like it even matters.

[identity profile] spam-27.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)

It does to them?

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have a really hard time believing that a fucking pronoun can ruin the ability to creatively identify with the music, sorry.

If the original song was so off that they had to change the lyrics, why did they choose it to cover in the first place?
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
If it bothers someone enough that they need to alter the lyrics of the song, clearly they shouldn't have covered it in the first place.

Also, sometimes it's awesome when the pronouns don't change and the gender of the person singing does, like Cat Power's cover of "(Can't Get No) Satisfaction", since it's interesting to hear the line "he can't be a man cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me" coming from a woman.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-08-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
...sayyyy for example, a gay person changes the lyrics to match their sexuality. Would you say that they should be forced to sing the song like a straight person because it doesn't matter, or is it just straight singers who're stupid for wanting to sing about falling for someone they'd actually be attracted to? Personally I don't care one way or the other, I've heard songs sung both with original pronouns and changed pronouns by singers of varying genders, and I don't care from a listeners pov, but I think that if someone wants to change the pronoun to reflect their own preferences, that's their affair and they don't deserve to get sneered at for it.

OMG YES THIS (late yaaay)

Like when Joss Stone covered Fell in Love with a Girl, by the White Stripes, and just had to change it to "boy" even though it threw a whole bunch of the rhymes off. ????!!! it annoys me so much I actually feel ridiculous. Conversely, when someone covers a song by some opposite-gendered person and doesn't switch the pronouns my heart sings.

One of my pet peeves is when people cover songs and change the gender of the pronouns. Doesn't matter if it's a woman or a man changing the pronouns, it's just dumb. Lrn2covers, people

Come join the wonderful world of folk music! We have girls singing about nailing girls and boys pining for lost loves. Who were sailor boys.

Ah. Good times.
