It bothers me too. More often than not, gendered pronouns will keep a song off a mix if they don't work. Ultimately, the musician wrote the song the way they wrote it and it's pointless to whine, but, at the same time... why not write it in a way that can apply to everyone? That's how I would do it.

Because songwriters are not always (or even often) writing for you or for anyone else?

Since they're selling their songs, yes, they are writing with an audience in mind.

Wow. No. You're just wrong. I don't normally default to "you're wrong" in an argument, but you are just plain wrong.

Like any form of art, people create it, tweak it and change it here and there, market it, and people either buy it or they don't. Sometimes art (including music) is created with the sole intention of selling it and is thus shaped by how to achieve the biggest audience, and I can't cite numbers to say how prevalent that is, but it is certainly not the case across the board, be it painters, writers, filmmakers, musicians, or songwriters. To say that someone should change their sense of expression to please the most people is so utterly ridiculous - yes, it does happen, but the expectation and assumption that it should is just absurd. Would you tell an author not to use any names or gendered pronouns for their characters so that a book could appeal to the widest possible audience?

I mean, you're just wrong. I hate to play this card, but I know many songwriters, several of them successful. Not a single person I know writes "with the audience in mind."

The anon above already made the main damn point, a person could easily be writing a song to say, their fiance, and they really are only writing it for one specific person.

But more importantly, even if they are writing with the adience in mind... the songs bothering you? Probably did notably well if they circulated enough for you to hear it and other people to know who your talking about. Which means that as they stand, they do in fact work. Or are so infamously bad they likely have more problems then gender pronoun alteration can fix.

you know what happens when someone writes with the audience in mind? Born This Way
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

Not all music is pop music, so no.
