From what I've gathered, Homestuck is a really complicated series, and in some parts rather tedious. Not following everything wouldn't necessarily make you stupid, I think.

Truth.

It is complicated and sprawling, and I think that you really have to be into the series to "get" it all. But mostly because as you said, there's just so much to keep track of!

It's really to glaze over at some points or just totally miss certain stuff when you're being bombarded by details, or skimming through parts you don't particularly like.

The beginning also throws a lot of people off, imo.

Hay OP, we can be stupid together! I couldn't get into Homestuck itself but I do like some of the fanart. And then when I kind of established a favorite character or two I went to the Wiki to try to figure out what exactly was going on, I couldn't make a lick of sense out of ANY of it. So.. fanart only, yay!

I have the sneaking suspicion that a fair number of fans just hang out in the fandom and read the wiki. There's enough there that you'd never actually have to read the comic to be a fan.

It's always confusing at first, so it depends how far you read, but it's not for everyone. Some people are just in for the art and characters, which is okay too. /shrug

Hey, maybe you're reading it wrong? (open the chat logs, watch the animations through)

Or perhaps you're simply trying too hard to fit it into preconceived notions of what a story should be like? There's no shame in rereading it if you're missing a couple of points.

The main thing to realize is that barely anyone in the fandom "get's" it. You don't need to get it to be a real fan, you just have to like it.

this is kind of late, but The best part about Homestuck is that everyone's a little confused after an update! I pick up a lot of things I missed by reading other people's tumblrs/talking to friends/occasionally going to the 4chan generals. I'm sure if your friends aren't dicks they'd be happy to answer questions about things you're not getting.
