You like that he's "baseborn"? Wow. You pulled no punches with that one...

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Get over it, that's the terminology used in the book.

Except from what we know, Jon Snow is STILL a lord's son. His mother may have not been noble, and he might have been conceived out of but he definitely wasn't "baseborn" (and IIRC a part of his book one arc was realizing that he had grown up in a position of privilege).

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
It means illegitimate in this context.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a fan of the show or the books? Because in the books, baseborn and bastard have different understandings. They both simply mean illegitimate and only illegitimate. A baseborn can be, and on multiple occasions is, the child of a high-ranking mother (Robert Baratheon and a noble woman had a bastard daughter that the king acknowledges as his). A bastard also in no way means the father does not acknowledge the child. He just hasn't formally acknowledged the child in the eyes of the law.

OP are you actually me? Well said, well said.

Since Rhaegar was married to Elia, Jon would still be 'baseborn'.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Targaryans practiced legal and legally-recognized polygamy, tho.

If it makes you feel any better, he'd still be a bastard? Rhaegar was married, in any case, to another woman. It's not like if R+L=J is true he'd have any claim to the throne, being illegitimate. (90% sure on that - don't quote me.)

But yeah, whether Rhaegar was his father, or Ned, he's still the bastard-born child of a noble. Not base-born.

[identity profile] poisoncity.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
ohhey, note to self: dictionary next time. Baseborn = illegitimate. Ignore me. :P

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt that GRRM is going to go with that theory, if it makes you feel better. He's too big of a troll and he would be mad that fans had "figured it out" so easily.

[identity profile] caffeinefreeddp.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If it was GRRM's original plan, I have no doubt he saw all the speculation, laughed an evil laugh, and changed things around. That's just how he rolls.

TBH, I love it when authors do that.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Too obvious for GRRM's style.

Although I still want to find out what actually did happen at the Harrenhal tournament, and the backstory about R + L.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Also lmao, Kit's pout in that pic.

I really can't stand Jon Snow's boring, sour ass, but they got a great actor to play him. So emo. He plays Jon perfectly.

To be honest most people I know think it's a plausible theory, but don't exactly love it - as you said, it's pretty cliched. On the other hand I am under the impression that to most casual readers - those who read the books once and then put them back on the shelf without devoting all that energy and brainspace that us hardcore fans do XD - R+L=J wouldn't be that obvious after all, so who knows.

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
He's still a bastard son of a nobleman, though - I'm not sure it makes that much difference if he's Rhaegar's bastard or Ned Stark's. He's still born and raised in a considerable amount of privilege either way. .

I'm probably in the minority/doin' it wrong, but I love that theory to bits, not for anything to do with Jon, but because of what it does for Lyanna and Rhaegar. Jon is completely incidental to my adoration of the theory. I just want lots of tragically beautiful Rhaegar/Lyanna fic and art. ;D

However, I'm also of the suspicion that it was the original plan, but that GRRM is going to troll us since fandom figured it out. :/

He'd still be a bastard, though. People give him shit for being a bastard AND a ~lord's son~ as it is, so having his dad be a Targ wouldn't change THAT much. Robert's bastards didn't get mad prestige or anything.

I'm okay with the R+L=J thing, but it's not my OMG HEADCANON either. I don't really have a pet theory, I just wanna learn the truth about his parentage at some point.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to inform you of this...but Jon's real father is Hodor.

[identity profile] linndechir.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, OP, you're not alone. I think that theory is utterly cliché and really hope GRRM is not going through with it. It doesn't help that the R+L=J fans are often annoying and bitching at everyone who doesn't like their pet theory. I don't even know why the theory is so popular. People love one of the most unconventional fantasy series ever, but they still want Jon to have the most conventional "he's the secret son of a prince" background? Huh.

[identity profile] ian-karkull.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd hate R+L=J a lot less (it is pretty plausible) if proponents of this theory wouldn't insist that it means Jon will take the Iron Throne because of it. Lol, no.
First of all, he's still ilegitimate and second of all, have we been reading the same story? Jon's story is about duty. He's had the opportunity to forsake his vows three times already, for vengeance, for love and for glory, but he never did. I may not like the guy too much but he has always done what was right, even if it meant personal sacrifice for him. In that, he's truly Ned's son.
Now he'll just magically abandon his vows, his sworn brothers and his entire characerization just because of a name that means little and less to him?
You know nothing, R+L=J theorists.

[identity profile] marumae.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
While I love the Rhaegar+Lyanna spin to it, in general I'm kind of meh on who Jon's parents are. Someone in a forum once said they reason they weren't as fond of this theory is because, if Jon ever found out, they highly doubted (and I agree with them) he'd suddenly throw on the mantle of True Born King and all that shit and go fly off into the sunset with his Aunt/Wife Daenyrs and make perfect Targaryen dragon children, and more then likely he'd be upset about the fact that he's not really Ned's son and I completely agree.

I like the idea that Jon really is just Ned's bastard, I don't think he needs "true royal blood" to justify his own speshulness, some people like the idea of him finding his own "family" to replace the one he never really had as a kid and I disagree, I like the idea of Jon finding his own place in the world, by his OWN choices, without having a family and a kingdom thrust upon him to make him "happy". If finds it and chooses to go with it, great! I just don't think it's necessary is all.
