The first house we owned had a cupboard (well, a closet) under the stairs. It wasn't quite the same as that house's... since the closet was actually in a bedroom (there were two rooms downstairs and the stairway went up between them; the closet under the stairs was in one of the bedrooms.)

I didn't read Harry Potter until the 4th book came out (then promptly read the previous three...) but it's all I could think of after that. How horrible it would be to make a small child sleep in there. :(

Did it bug anyone else how lightly the Dursleys got off in the books? Like, they mentally and emotionally abused a child from age 1 till age 11 and even after and Dumbledore is just sort of "Damn you guys are dicks".

I bought my first house a year and a half ago and it has what I call my Harry Potter closet because it's beneath the staircase. Although the door is positioned in a different place. It has a pole across the front like in closets for hanging clothes, so if I acquired a bunch of fur coats and hung them up then I could call it my Narnia closet.

I joke about renting the space out for half of what I rent my spare rooms for with my friends sometimes.

My first apartment had a Harry Potter closet. That's what everyone in the complex called them, even. They weren't as roomy as Harry's, though; they had the water heater in them and there was only really room for a few boxes.

A really close friend of mine rented the "cupboard" of a house for a while. It was about 13 feet by 4 feet, underneith a grand staircase. Just wide enough and tall enough to stick a mattress in.

She lived in this bizarro tenement which had once been a huge single family house, but had since been subdivided into 4 apartments, and those 4 apartments had been further sublet. She lived with 7 other people in her 4th, all of whom had carved out these weird little niches as their rooms. One guy had the entry-way. Another had curtained off part of the living room. Two people shared what had been a parlour or something.

There are so many things wrong with this secret, but the thing I find most disturbing is how your prioritize what you want in a house. It's all about location, if you want a cupboard under the stairs you can always just change that after you buy the house, but you can't change a shitty location.

OP, I totally get what you're saying. It's the novelty of having that cupboard there, even if it's only used to keep brooms/cleaning supplies in. just knowing "oh I have a harry potter closet" is satisfying enough.
