You know, yeah. He's one of my favorites because he says the things I want so badly to say to my freshmen comp class and can get away with it, and because I enjoy the way he calls people on their shit and isn't afraid to do it, but the whole Lily thing. Eh. I didn't find it amazing or tragic or anything like that. It's impossible to like Snape and not be astounded by it or something.

So, he loved someone? I'd honestly find it more tragic and moving if he never had, but was doing the right thing just BECAUSE it was the right thing, and he knew he'd done the wrong one before. I mean, redemption without the whole overplayed lost love element, you know?

I'd have preferred that, too--overplayed is right. I wish writers could find a way to redeem characters without romance. Especially since it's not only overused but hard to buy sometimes. Not to disparage the ~Power of Love~ or anything, but for all we know Snape's thing for Lily made him much more of a dick before it made him less of a dick. The bitterness of 'losing' Lily to James probably made him jump on the Death Eater train that much quicker.

Yeah. I like the Lily story, don't get me wrong, but repentance for his own reasons would be awesome, too.
