it is definitely like a crime to not like Snape. But I agree completely with this secret. I mean yeah, he was an ass and tried to repent but still treated everyone else like shit and that the world owed him.

sorry fandom but I can't like Snape

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
With you all the way, anon. I don't hate Snape by any means, but his storyline just did not affect me at all. It made it kind of awkward while all my friends were talking about how much they cried at his death and I was just standing there. :/

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's a crime at all. I appreciate someone who can say "I don't like x character" without then belittling me for liking the same character (which is what a lot of people who dislike Snape do). I don't care if you don't like Snape just don't be a dick to me for liking him (and vice versa).

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, anon. I hardly care for the snape/lily story.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you may be the only person who would ever say they would want Umbridge to win a best character award

UMBRIDGE? smh

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Umbridge? She was a great creepy ass villain (imo, she was a better villain than Voldy) but probably not best character material.

[identity profile] lovestyle.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow why is everyone who agrees with you anon? IA. I dislike Snape, and Umbridge was extremely well-written. She was amazingly fun to hate, which is one of the many reasons why book 5 was my favorite. Umbridge is the very reason that the students really started to act on their own behalf and come to realize that, hey, not all authority figures who say they are only looking out for your best interests and protecting you are to be trusted.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Snape, but I have to shake my head a little at him being voted "best character," ESPECIALLY if we're talking about movie!Snape here.

It's really not surprising, though. There's something about brooding assholes with tragic back stories that give people the vapors.

I hate Snape without shame. His "love" for Lily was obsessive and extremely creepy. Lily was a person who made her own choices, not some object that James "won" and Snape "lost." He was a horrible teacher who took his misery out on children who did nothing to wrong him (Hermione, Neville etc etc). Ultimately, his actions later in life were for the right side, but his motivations were fucked up.

The poll was web-based and every Alan Rickman fan made sure that he won. Those people are dedicated to their obsession.

I still remember the Time Out Web poll for Favourite Londoner where they had to post this:

"Many thanks to all the eager Alan Rickman fans who have left their votes below - we have taken note of this tidal wave of support for the great man but we would appreciate it now if you stood back and let others have their say."

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay. I like him a lot, but you're allowed. (I'd have rather Hermione win too)

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really apathetic towards Snape because I have serious issues with him and I'd really like to punch him in the face for how he treated Harry, Hermione, and Neville.

But I agree that Umbridge is an incredible character, and I think the proof of that is that a large part of the fandom hates her more than Voldemort. I've heard so many people say they got so aggravated with her they wanted to scream and throw their books at the wall. I think Jo wrote her extremely well, and that's why I really, really fucking hate Umbridge. For the poll though, I wanted Hermione to win.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, yeah. He's one of my favorites because he says the things I want so badly to say to my freshmen comp class and can get away with it, and because I enjoy the way he calls people on their shit and isn't afraid to do it, but the whole Lily thing. Eh. I didn't find it amazing or tragic or anything like that. It's impossible to like Snape and not be astounded by it or something.

So, he loved someone? I'd honestly find it more tragic and moving if he never had, but was doing the right thing just BECAUSE it was the right thing, and he knew he'd done the wrong one before. I mean, redemption without the whole overplayed lost love element, you know?

...They were picking best characters at the NYC premiere? I was there (ALL FUCKING DAY) and I didn't hear anything about that. Eh, well. I hear ya--I do like him and his story made me sad in the end, but he's far from my #1 fave and he doesn't affect me emotionally the way many other characters do. And when the Lily thing was revealed, I thought back and tried to remember if I'd guessed that before or had an opinion, and I...like, literally couldn't remember if I'd thought about it. It just didn't dawn on me to obsess about it. I did definitely think he was gonna die in DH and knew he was good and that it'd be revealed once it was too late or whatever, but I didn't think beyond that. IDK.

I like this secret a lot.

I'm a weirdo in that I'm totally compelled by like every Slytherin character EXCEPT Snape. I honestly can't explain why. Maybe it's because I've had so many bad and nasty teachers that I can never really get past his poor treatment of characters like Neville and Hermione (yes, Hermione, goddammit, he freaking yells at her for trying to answer his questions and doing shit right!), maybe it's because I was ultimately content with what we learned about him in the books.

maybe it's because McGonagall is one of my top ten favorite characters in HP

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I thought his storyline was legit, but I never really LIKED him. He was an asshole.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I am somewhat fond of Snape.
But I don't care for the Snape/Lily storyline at all either. My initial reaction to it was essentially, "wtf is this?"

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I totally know how you feel. I liked Snape the character a lot better when his job was to be the jerk teacher that pretty much everyone has had at some point. his legit storylines just bored me.

[identity profile] tw-31988.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
same. it's not that i don't like him. i just don't give a shit about him.

[identity profile] cinnamonlace.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like the way he's written, but he's not my favourite character. Just like how I like how book-Umbridge is written as a character, but I abhor movie-Umbridge. She looks extremely similar to my doting, kind grandmother. Seriously (http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee151/puddinchan/Photo0044.jpg), look at that image, then at movie-Umbridge. :|
