Does Aurora count as fridging?

I like some of the plotlines, but it bugs me that most of them use the females as fodder to show the suffering of a male.

There aren't many stories where the woman is the one losing her whole family/husband/friend.

Exactly. I can't think of *one,* though I'm sure they're out there.

There's a whole subset of Female Assassin movies that do that to the point of cliche, actually. Kill Bill, etc. Colombiana with Zoe Saldana is the latest example.

Female Assassin movies aside, A Song of Ice And Fire/Game of Thrones does it (woman losing family/husband/friend) at least twice, wait, three times off the top of my head, Spirited Away does it, The Darkangel Trilogy definitely does it... maybe it's just more common in the fantasy genre,

They happen a fair amount in chick flicks and date movies. The husband dies, or the child dies, or their friends die, and she goes on and becomes strong, and finds new romance. I just saw a movie where the couple in the film get together to raise the kid of their friends who died, and although they hate each other to begin with, their love of their friend and their bonding over the kid make them see past it. The friends were totally fridged.

Other than romcoms? Other than the female character fixing her world by falling in love?

I wasn't clear enough, I'm sorry. Fridging is more common in action or superhero movies and I remember only one case where the female character was out for revenge because her family was killed and not because she was abused.

Well, are we talking about characters who exist solely to be killed for the purposes of giving the main character a sympathetic motivation to spur them through all the actions the plot requires?

Cuz if we are, there's no reason to exclude romcoms and female characters fixing the world through love. It's a cheap and easy method of creating instant character angst. Seems to me a bit odd to give the chick flicks a pass on it.

Honestly, the only difference I see between the two is that in the one case (the action flicks) it spurs the protagonist to seek revenge, while in the other case (the chick flicks) it spurs the protagonist to find healing. In both cases the person who dies is really just a face and a name, not any kind of a well rounded character.

Well, I'm looking for some positive examples of female characters getting shit done after everything is taken away from them. I feel like romcoms - in general - are all about a woman needing love to go on and I find that pretty depressing.

And how many romcoms have a female character needing healing because somebody died? It's usually because 1) they were dumped or 2) they did the dumping.

P.S. I Love You is a good example. The story is about the main female character recovering from the death of her husband. My favourite thing about the book (I didn't see the film) was that while there were hints of romance towards the end, it didn't end and wasn't about her finding a new love to go on. It was about her healing. It's a brilliant book.

I'll check it! Thank you!

Oddly enough, Bleach's Orihime is coming to mind. I haven't read beyond the first 10 or so volumes, so I could be wrong, but her whole backstory seemed to be her brother died and she had to become strong to make him proud or something.

idk

Not to mention horror movies. The protagonist in most horror movies is usually a female, and it's usually her friends/family who die for the sake of dying in order for the protagonist to become a stronger/better person who is capable of defeating the villain.
