as a children's story*, tollbooth is awesome. as a metaphor for depression (which, look at milo pre-tollbooth, and at the doldrums sequence; the subtext is there), it kindof sucks like a sucking thing. "the power of imagination will fix your brain!" no.

*which, it is in fact one of my favorite stories of all time in any genre or age group

Honestly, though it may not work for all I think flexing your creative muscles helps you if you're in a depressed state. For me when I was younger and even now, having too much time to think makes me nervous and practically hysterical. Reading a book, drawing a picture or writing is way to distract me from my current woes and not get me to that state. Even if its only temporary, its nice to have a small escape.
