I need to re-read that book! I remember it being awesome when I read it as a kid.

"And the message is better"

The Alice books had a message? I assume you mean Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, right? I thought they were just Lewis Carroll playing around with language. I'm not being snarky; I certainly don't think every story needs a message, and I honestly didn't think the Alice books had one.

"In this box are all the words I know…Most of them you will never need, some you will use constantly, but with them you may ask all the questions which have never been answered and answer all the questions which have never been asked. All the great books of the past and all the ones yet to come are made with these words. With them there is no obstacle you cannot overcome. All you must learn to do is to use them well and in the right places..."

I have such fond memories of reading this book. :)

AGREED!

I know quite a few people who like Alice in Wonderland, and that's great (anything that gets people reading!), but for me, reading those books was a slog. Tollbooth was a lot more enjoyable -- I actually cared about all the characters and where they ended up.

[identity profile] nettlecoat.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, this book. <3 It definitely captured my imagination more than Alice in Wonderland, although now that I'm older I better appreciate the satire and wordplay. Still, Phantom Tollbooth is lovely book.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that book. Couldn't get into the movie, but maybe that's just me.

[identity profile] mizufae.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Tollbooth so much. SO MUCH, I almost don't want it to have a fandom. It stands on its own so well... I still find myself thinking about the color symphony when I have idle moments, for no reason at all... Anyway I kind of want it to remain untouched because I love it so much. But at the same time I think we've finally got the technology now that we could get some really beautiful animation or maybe collaborative writing expanding on the ideas in it and it wouldn't be cringeworthy; it might even be amazing.

Not here for the comparison with Alice in Wonderland. I love the Phantom Tollbooth to pieces <3 I've read it so many times and I still pick up the book now and then to marvel in the rich world and wonderful characters. And the excitement I feel over everything happening (even when the characters might not be feeling it). <33333

This book is fucking awesome.

[identity profile] tenonthedot.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, my Dad read those to me when I was a kid :)

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I should reread Phantom Tollbooth. It's one of my favorite books of all time and has done so much to shape me into who I am today.

[identity profile] rythen.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that I remember so little about this book, except that I loved it. I read it back in... 4th or 3rd grade I think. Much younger than 10 years old, if you don't know US grades.
We were going to do a play in the class we read the book in, I was going to be the dog.

I really should find this and re-read it.

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both this book and the Alice books, and Phantom Tollbooth is always the first book I recommend to people when they ask me for book recommendations.

...Tollbooth has a movie? I love that book so much, why don't I know this? /fails

Every child should read The Phantom Tollbooth. *nod*

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!!!!!! This was one of my favorite books as a kid.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that I'm pretty sure the Alice books are part of the inspiration for Phantom Tollbooth, I see no reason to try to choose between them - they are each awesome.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-13 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
<3

Loved this book as a kid, though it took me a bit until I grew older to really understand the wordplay and all. It was just kind of a hilarious ride.

[identity profile] eiviiaru.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really think Alice and Tollbooth should be compared or forced to complete -- as was mentioned above, Alice is just a bit of fun, not really intended to have a message -- but I agree with you that Phantom Tollbooth is wonderful and should be more widely read. I need to reread it myself, actually.

[identity profile] lai-lai-ranma.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking about this book the other day and wanting to re-read it.

[identity profile] ayarane.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Favorite book EVER.

It feels especially relevant today, with its warning against the evils of ignorance despite how we as society don't really give a flying poo about education anymore. :|

(Also? I want a "why not?" medallion. But a "for the lulz" version would be fine too.)

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Freaking yes.

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The Alice books didn't have a message. They were just "A lot of weird shit happened. The End."
