Notes:

This is not your forum to identify and call out specific people just to call them assholes. Call out general actions you find reprehensible, mod ability/inability, that kind of stuff, but once you get into what basically amounts to 'this person is a stupid bitch and here are some icons/an lj layout/add. info to identify them with' - no.

Hmm, I can understand it creeped you out...but the movie is much more about what destroys you from within - so I don't see what it has to do with the lights being on/of?

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because Darren Aronofsky makes the horrible things that destroy you from within look and feel horrifying and needs a hug.

And an intervention with puppies.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I feel I'm more easily distracted from disturbing or creepy thoughts when the lights are on. It's not so much that I'm worried something is lurking in the dark.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience - and I have way too much experience with that kind of reaction to scary stuff - there's no logic to it, sleeping with the lights on/under the covers/in your parent's bedroom would not actually protect you from whatever you are afraid of were it real, but it still helps. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I remember feeling a little trapped afterward, since there was nowhere she could go in the movie to escape the trouble. I wasn't even in an inherently trapped situation.

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's one of the main reasons that psychological horror is so much scarier that straightforward violent or paranormal horror- when the danger is inside your own head, there isn't anywhere to go.

[identity profile] opal-skies.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I felt that I enjoyed the movie a lot more while I wasn't actually watching it. xP
That said, it does borrow a lot of techniques from Japanese horror films, images from which have managed to haunt me for almost a year. So I understand, OP: it doesn't feel good to have to go around with the lights on and feel like you've been forcibly regressed to the age of five or so. :(

[identity profile] cheshirecat324.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, fuck Japanese horror films. I mean, they have some amazing stories and brilliant techniques and everything, but I have enough trouble sleeping as it is, tyvm.

[identity profile] silvereriena.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Every time she was pulling at the skin on her fingers I just cringed.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. My mom was watching Black Swan in the living room and I walked in on that exact scene and I was like "OH SWEET CHRIST, WHAT IS SHE DOING D:"

I was too creeped out to watch any other parts of the movie

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, God, this.

[identity profile] hyper-amychao.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
that one part at the party freaked me out bad. It made me really self-concious because I have a nasty habit of picking at my cuticles like that until they bleed, and I hadn't really noticed until my mom pointed it out and said something about how I reminded her of Nina. D:

potential spoilers

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I forced myself to watch this movie because I have pretensions about Being A Movie Nerd. Not even a quarter of a way through I found myself sinking lower and lower in my seat, and by the end of it I was hiding behind my knees, thinking, 'it's almost over, it's almost over'.

The sexual harassment and mommy issues and the stomach glass were triggering as all fuck and I'm glad to say that yes, it was a good movie that I am NEVER WATCHING AGAIN.

OP, I'd put up friendly Christmas lights or something, so you don't get the weird bleachy light that was in the movie in your room.

Oh god, that movie. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and although I loved it and thought it was brilliant, I definitely needed a good, stiff drink afterwards. Aronofsky is just a little too good at showing what it's like to completely lose your grip on yourself like that.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've always believed that psychological thrillers are a lot scarier than the gorier horror films.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, anon. I think I had trouble sleeping for a few days because I couldn't stop thinking about or seeing things from that movie when I closed my eyes. It really unnerved me and I don't think I can watch it again.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
At the time, this was the first movie I'd seen in a while that was suspenseful and scary for me. It's still the best horror movie I've seen in a while. Even the physical horror in it, like when she's picking at her skin, is so much more effective than the over-the-top gore you see in a lot of horror and torture porn movies these days.

For me, though, the scariest aspect of the movie was her mother.

I know how you feel anon. I thought it was a great movie and all, but this is also one of those "great films" I could never watch a second time. I would probably go insane myself after a second viewing.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I had to stop watching halfway. not that it was scary, the whole movie just made me feel like absolute shit. It got under my skin.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
RIGHT? RIGHT???? JFC I FREAKED OUT--and then it became my favorite film of 2010. Brilliant flawless horrifying amazing etc

[identity profile] myuki-chan.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I understand, OP. It was a great movie but I have no desire to watch it again anytime soon. I'm not easily creeped out but that movie really managed to crawl under my skin.

[identity profile] ketita.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
I seem to be the only one who didn't find the movie particularly scary. The physical parts, like when she scratched/picked at her self were uncomfortable, but they didn't leave me horrified for days. I thought the portrayal of her instability was very well done, though.
(Walking out of the theater, the guy I was with said, "So, did I ever tell you I'm actually schizophrenic?". Our conversation then made a much bigger impression on me XD)

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
...This is why I have yet to watch Black Swan. I would totally be doing the exact same thing. xD

[identity profile] jump2narnia.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really cared for The Black Swan myself. I didn't really understand the hype. Yeah, the acting was good, but it was just too disgusting for my tastes. (This is coming from someone who watched Repo! The Genetic Opera and laughed at the gory bits)
