At the time, this was the first movie I'd seen in a while that was suspenseful and scary for me. It's still the best horror movie I've seen in a while. Even the physical horror in it, like when she's picking at her skin, is so much more effective than the over-the-top gore you see in a lot of horror and torture porn movies these days.

For me, though, the scariest aspect of the movie was her mother.

Absofuckinglutely. Her mom clipping her broken toenails freaked me the fuck out, as well as her mom constantly coming in demanding to know how things were going, and then playing her musical box while her daughter was turned away and staring into the camera. Creepy.

But even worse were the implications of how deep the mother's control over her daughter went. Like, the little princess-y room with butterflies all over the walls. Nothing in her room is her own. She has no identity there, no safe place.

Eh, late reply but whatever.

I keep wavering on Nina's mother. I mean, yeah, there were all kinds of weird/bad vibes in her scenes, BUT it's also pretty clearly established that even if Nina really goes off the deep end during the course of the film, she wasn't exactly stable before, either. Which I guess could be rooted in her mother issues, but I dunno, I mean, if you knew your daughter had a tendency towards bulimia and self-harm, wouldn't you tend to be more intrusive than the mother of an adult would normally be? Obviously there wasn't anything healthy going on, but I find it hard to differentiate between one's affect on the other and who got the ball rolling to Psychological Break Town.
