I'm thinking Porgy & Bess, but that's an opera, or The Wiz?

My first thought was Once On This Island, but that may just be because it's the only musical with an all-black cast I can name off the top of my head.

Wait. The Wiz is supposed to have a black cast? I've seen it done by a couple of local high schools but they couldn't have cast it that way even if they'd gotten everyone African in the school.

I think it is, originally.

I'm a white person who once played Dorothy in The Wiz, and honestly, for all everyone tried to say there was no reason it didn't work with a white cast, the script is really full of black 70's culture and it embarrasses me to admit I was ever in it, now. It's maybe not as overt as other examples, but from the dialogue to the character archetypes to some of the jokes, plus the greater emphasis on the emancipation of the Winkies than the musical of The Wizard of Oz... it's definitely obvious.

I really, really love the music, though. I'm not going to pass judgement on white casts doing The Wiz, but I will say that trying to pretend it doesn't make any difference is straight-up lying.

...man, I can't even tell if this person is trolling. I mean, Hollywood casts white people in POC roles often enough.

It isn't offensive in my country, especially because there weren't many black people around here until ten or fifteen years ago.

Yeah, same here. I don't think we have a single professional POC actor yet. It's caused some amusing workarounds in our production of Hair. (My favorite was when they cast a white dude, made him stay white with delusions of being black)

big pet peeve of mine: when people comment like this and don't bother to explain /why/ the opinion is 'stupid'. as much as people like to think their opinions are the only ones, these things aren't a matter of 'lol but it's so /obvious/ that op is a dumbass.'

Clearly, I didn't think it was the only opinion, or I would have just assumed it was a troll. I said that I couldn't be sure.

So much fail, so little time.

I've seen alot of musicals and don't see problems with finding POC casts. Which one are you talking about? Maybe it's an accident of where you live? I live in Los Angeles and casting doesn't seem to be a problem.

Community theater from my experience usually does colourblind-casting. If there is an amateur production of the play you may be in luck.

Otherwise... just no.

Though I have wondered about the ethics of playing ethnicities you pass as but aren't...

I'm not sure I get this secret entirely...

Either way... My school did the wizard of Oz with a Black FEMALE Lion and an Asian Scarecrow. *shrug*
