Notes:

This is not your forum to identify and call out specific people just to call them assholes. Call out general actions you find reprehensible, mod ability/inability, that kind of stuff, but once you get into what basically amounts to 'this person is a stupid bitch and here are some icons/an lj layout/add. info to identify them with' - no.

Don't worry about it! You're allowed to dislike something and then change your mind! If you're a fan now, that's all that matters.

Unless you were actually mean to the fans. But even if that's the case, there's nothing you can do about it now but to apologize and try not to make the same mistake next time something you dislike gets popular.

I say this as someone who's been a fan since she was six.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I was never mean to the fans. Sure, I was asking myself why anyone would be interested in HP and couldn't understand it at all, but I never bashed people for liking it.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Don't ever feel like you don't have the right to a place in the Harry Potter fandom because of something like that. Tastes change, and what matters is that NOW, you like Harry Potter, and that is all that matters. I'd take one fun, passionate, nice Harry Potter fan that came into the fandom somewhat later in life than a million wanky, bitter fans that have been reading it since they were in diapers. I started reading Harry Potter when I was six, in 2001. I grew up with it and will grow old with it, and if Pottermore gives someone who wasn't able to grow up with it a chance to "be there from the beginning", I think that's awesome. I assure you, no one will really care if you got one of the early accounts fair and square, and if they do, they're probably of the obsessive and bitchy fan-variety, and they can get over it. I'll see you in Pottermore :)

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
aw, that's so nice of you ;_;

I always had the feeling that I didn't have the same right to HP fandom related things as the other fans do who have been there from the beginning.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
p sure the point is whether you stuck with potter 'until the end'

whenever that beginning was for you

[identity profile] junebug-13.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, there's no reason why you shouldn't be allowed to love Harry Potter or get an early Pottermore account just because you're a bit late to the party. I know there are some snobby fans, but just ignore them; there are jerks in every fandom. I've grown up with the series and I feel nothing but joy hearing how happy the series makes you. Just enjoy it and have a good time. :)

[identity profile] intoalkaseltzer.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
sounds like a more interesting story than "i knew about harry potter from the beginning, like even before rowling"

[identity profile] caesaria.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Noooo, don't feel like that! I'm sure the fandom will be more excited that you've seen the light and got into it at all :D
Anyone who bashes someone just because they came into the fandom late is not a real fan anyway, so don't worry ;-)

As someone who came in mid-way (around book 4), I am glad you're in the fandom now and I hope you enjoy Pottermore :D

PS: Hi, fellow German HP fan <3

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you :) I feel a lot better after reading all the nice comments <3

oh and hi there, even if I'm not from Germany, but from Austria :3

Pfft man, you really shouldn't feel like a "bad fan" or anything like that. I was only vaguely into Harry Potter over the past 10 years, and just NOW I'm getting into it hardcore xD We can be new-ish fans together! <3

I'm working on my German (going to Germany for a year, woohoo!) and I was thinking of reading Harry Potter in German to practice :D

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
*waves* You should TOTALLY do that, with the books. I love reading them in French & Spanish to brush up on vocab. :D It's quite fun. The woman next to me in line to see DH Part II the first time was reading OotP in Hebrew.

[identity profile] coyoteseven.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with everyone else here about not beating yourself up about this. However, I think there is a lesson for everyone here about trying out new things.

Perhaps from now on you can have a "three strikes" rule? Like with HP, you could have gotten the second book after disliking the first, and said to yourself, "OK, I didn't like the first book very much, but I'll give it two more chances!" That kinda thing.

That example is not meant to guilt or shame you! It's just an example.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Your taste changed! It's no big deal. You deserve it now just as much as any other fan does. <3

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
My cousin did the exact same thing, OP. She used to hate HP and talk about how much she disliked it and then she read the books and did a complete 180.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I ever disliked HP, but I read the first book when I was 11 or 12 and wasn't all that into it. I liked it okay, but not enough to want to read the other books (I think Goblet of Fire had just been released). I didn't decide to read the rest of the series until I happened to watch the Prisoner of Azkaban movie. Then I was quite into the books for a while.

There's no harm in having your tastes change! I'm sure there's plenty of room in the fandom for you. I know how it feels though -- when I was a kid, I read some of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales and absolutely hated them. Now, he's one of my favorite authors and I'm kinda ashamed.

[identity profile] fickletastictot.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I ain't even mad, bro.

Live long and prosper or whateverrr~

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
not going to waste my time reading all that but

who

the

fuck

cares

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're being a little hard on yourself. :) Certain things just don't appeal to us as kids and people tend to change their tastes in everything over time. Even if you read the last book and found you still didn't like it there wouldn't be anything wrong with that.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the books now. I hope you have fun with Pottermore! I didn't know about the signups, but I'm hoping to get an account in October when it comes out.

[identity profile] babybeluga2003.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to be "there from the beginning" to get the same enjoyment out of it. You deserve a Pottermore spot as much as any other fan.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-08-17 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Latecomer hug, anon! Tastes change and people do not get into potentially awesome experiences right off the bat for the weirdest of reasons (anyone raise a hand who hasn't gone "Where WAS I when so and so released?"). It happens. Were you having fun before, in other fandoms? I hope so. Now's the right time for HP and you're there. Cheer up!

(Anonymous) 2011-08-17 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad. The first book was geared to a much younger audience than the later books were, so it's understandable you as an older reader wouldn't relate to it.

Also, I know this is blasphemy, but JKR isn't the best writer ever. Her awkward sentences are a bit too plentiful, and she's in a love with adverbs. Adverbs are like literary herpes. Either she's firing her editors or they're afraid of her, because OOTP needed at least 100 pages cut. I'm embarrassed for her when I read that book, because she has her characters repeating stories over and over.

Of course I've read every one and seen every movie. They're good books, they're just not the second coming of literature. And if you managed to spot that as a speaker of another language, I think that makes you pretty smart.

[identity profile] zzyllo.livejournal.com 2011-08-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hon, of course you have the right to an early account. You did the homework, you read the books, and you followed the owl just like the rest of us. If you put in the effort, you've earned it. Just because you're a little newer to the fandom than some of us folks (I've been a fan since I was a little girl), it doesn't mean you're any less of a fan than the rest if us. I hope you have a blast in pottermore!

Don't worry, anon! Our fandom always welcomes new people. Half of the fans started disliking or plain not being interested in HP ;)
