Speaking as a non-slash fan, I have to say that I disagree. I'm not saying I don't love Bobby. I love the shit out of him, actually. 'Weekend at Bobby's' was the best episode of season six for me.

However, character is about evolution. It's about watching them grow and change, in both good and bad ways. Castiel has been around for three years and is arguably unrecognizable from that militant drone we met in Lazarus Rising. Bobby, on the other hand, is still that same guy we met six years ago. In that time he has established a clear role in Sam and Dean's lives and has gone through some things but essentially he's still the same guy we met six years ago.

So even though I adore Bobby, I do believe that he is more expendable than Castiel because his role is not necessary. Welcome, but definitely not necessary.

I agree about the lack of character development (this would have been circumvented a bit if they'd left him in the wheelchair, which still bugs me) but I don't think he's expendable. without Bobby, there's no one to talk sense to the bros about anything, ever. that's pretty much his only role, but it's an important one.

Yeah, I'll give him that. And I too wish they'd left him in the wheelchair. Talk about a deus-ex-machina for the deus-ex-machina. :-/

I kind of agree about the lack of character development (though we have been finding out more and more about his backstory as the series goes, and considering his history, one can argue that he's had his character development behind the scenes, in his previous years of hunting; there's not much more that could change him, except for great tragedy, and to be honest I really don't want that for him), but the way I see it he is certainly not expandable - if anything, he's the only family the boys have left, the only constant connection to humanity (and sanity, more or less) to ground them, their stable rock and safe-house; take that away, and the boys are even more adrift (not to mention it would be like losing another father).

Same here. I was actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed watching it. And I agree about him not having as much development as the Dean, Sam, and Cas - I think Bobby's had some, but yeah, he's pretty much the same as when we first saw him except he says "balls" more XD - but I don't think he's expendable. Then again, I'm of the mind that the SPN TPTB seriously need to stop it with killing off so many characters.
