I keep getting mixed signals about Tamora Pierce books! I want to read them, but some people tell me that they're full of fail when it comes to LGBT* and race stuff, and others tell me they handle those issues really well and have lots of non-white/cis/straight characters. WHICH IS IT, TAMORA PIERCE READING PEOPLE, YOU CONFUSE ME SO MUCH

Try reading them and find out for yourself. (I think they do an okay job at it, especially when put in TP's pseudo-advanced historical context, but I am also a white, straight female, ergo my interpretations are not the most accurate in terms of political correctness)

Well, I would say just read them and decide for yourself what you think? It's only really some of her later books that even address LGBT issues at all (the only two I can think of are Will of the Empress and Bloodhound) and personally I never found anything wrong with the depictions. If anything, it does a good job of introducing the idea of it to younger kids (my eleven year old self was SO CONFUSED about Daja and Rizu for a little while in Will of the Empress. Even though upon rereading it was pretty obvious Daja was crushing on her.)

As for the race issues, the Trickster series is a bit sketchy in that area.

It's mentioned vaaaaaguely in the Protector of the Small books (I think it's those ones) where her maid is a lesbian with the dressmaker friend lady, but it's only hinted at.

I'd say give 'em a shot and decide for yourself. She's got a pretty enjoyable writing style, and her storylines are pretty good. I would be careful, though, because in my experience, she tends to fall short a bit in her sequels (the first two or three books in her series tend to be pretty good, but any after that tend to be pretty dull or just plain bizarre).

I'm gonna say, read them and see what you think. No single group is a monolith; there are ALWAYS going to be disagreements about whether something is well-done, even if it actually is a legitimate portrayal.

(For example, when Cameron's Avatar came out, there was a large disagreement within the disability community. Some of us felt that the representation of Jake as being not yet adjusted to his disability was realistic and we sympathised because this is how we felt, but other people disliked it because he didn't accept his disabilities and wanted to be abled again. Both views are valid. That said, there are plenty of other problematic elements to that movie, but that particular issue got a lot of disagreement.)

I personally didn't have an issue with her portrayal of gay characters, but admittedly, a lot of what I remember is subtext (I haven't read Will of the Empress or the Beka Cooper books... waiting for the last Beka Cooper book to come out in a couple months so I can read them all together). Tammy has been pretty up-front about how happy she is that YA is more open now because she can write about issues more openly, rather than having to sneak it in.

Give 'em a try. Your library should have them. They're popular enough. :)

What annoyed me about Will of the Empress was how the kids were so dumbed down and there was a ton of manufactured conflict that was just unnecessary. But it had a good message in terms of sexuality, like, everyone's equal, let's all accept each other, it's all good, and so on. My issue with it was similar to with Half-Blood Prince- the teen hormones on overdrive and general idiocy. But the general message is pretty good, just yeah, I wish she hadn't ruined the characters for me, but it's a very YMMV situation.
