I've noticed that a lot of people that dislike Shinji do so because he hits too close to home. Most people would not be badasses in that situation, and while it's fun to watch an anime like that, it's not as realistic as NGE. I personally really loved him because of how relatable he was, since I have depression as well and it was somehow cathartic to watch Shinji.

I related much more to Asuka (see: confidence issues, abusive family i've only recently been able to admit are abusive, other people trying to pull me into their illness-headspace) and her breakdown at the end is just... guh. It's like watching myself fail everything & fall apart... now that I know what's coming I have to seriously psych myself up to watch the last few episodes.

Before I watched NGE, an ex-girlfriend of mine used to complain how much she hates Shinji and how he makes her uncomfortable, so I figured - just as the OP of the secret - that the show wasn't worth the trouble. I finally watched it last year, and was nearly horrified of how much Shinji basically was the male version of her. So yeah, I agree with your statement. I can also add that I never particularly liked Rei for these reasons, some of her character traits remind me too much of my own problems.
