It's also interesting to note that the reason both Vincent and Shinji were so accurate was because both characters lived in a world that either didn't understand the nature of their illness, or didn't care. They weren't getting the support they needed.

Honestly I find that understanding him (not necessarily liking him, but being able to acknowledge his feelings) is a pretty good litmus test for people's empathy in general. I'm sorry your friends were dicks about it, and I hope you find (or have found) some more understanding people to have in your life.

This. I related much more to Asuka (see: confidence issues, abusive family i've only recently been able to admit are abusive, other people trying to pull me into their illness-headspace) and her breakdown at the end is just... guh. It's like watching myself fail everything & fall apart... now that I know what's coming I have to seriously psych myself up to watch the last few episodes.

I'm glad you were able to find understanding people in your life, anon, and I hope things get easier for you ♥

Shinji reminds me of myself, but shows like Hetalia & Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan have helped me cope with my depression a little more. (It's funny because both TTGL & Eva were made by Gainax. Maybe that's the creator's ways of telling us something? <3)
I honestly think it's disgusting when people call Shinji a pussy or whatever. I know he's whiny and mopey, but most people with some form of depression have a tenancy to, y'know, seem that way? Also- even though he's only 14 years old, he's literally carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. "Little boy! Get in the robot and fight these godzilla-like super-powered monster-things to prevent Humanity from being wiped out! Also you gotta do it before time runs out and your Eva unit runs out of juice! Oh and your arm might feel like it's being ripped out sometimes but suck it up ya pussy! But y'know, you don't have to do this crap if you don't want to <3"
Also...he's a Japanese little boy :x The culture's over there is different. Even so much as disagreeing with another person's opinion can be seen as disagreeing with the actual person. They wouldn't even be able to riot & loot when their world is crashing down around them (literally) because that's simply "not how you behave in public" and their Japanese blood somehow makes them "better than that". Not to mention what it means to be "manly" over there is different in comparison to the states.
Anyway, even if Shinji is eerily like you, I hope that the movies manage to give Shinji the happy ending he deserves, whether he completely "gets over it" or not :) Feel better, Anon

Nevertheless, I guess most people who really dislike or hate Shinji just can't understand him and those people do seem a bit shallow to me. It's not easy to deal with this, but if a friend is suffering from depression or the likes, you should try to help or empathize with them... or you're not really a friend after all.

and kinda had a crush on him when I was about his age. I was a little surprised by the hate in the fandom for him and Asuka when I first joined, actually.Still, I don't know that everybody who hates the character would hate you, though. Fictional characters - at least those like Shinji, teenage pilots in the big robot anime genre - are there as an escape. Even though it's often preferable in, say, high literature for characters to be as close to real as possible, not everybody is happy with that in escapist fantasies like big robot sci-fi. In reality, it's totally understandable for a kid to react to abuse by shutting down, and nobody should blame them for it or call them weak. That would be a fucking terrible thing to do. But when you're watching it on the screen and all the characters are fictional, it can be disappointing not to see the kid stand up for themselves, because that's what you the audience member want them to do. And the insertion fantasy in Evangelion is not the child abuse and depression for most viewers, it's the piloting, and you're wondering why Shinji will throw that away when you would (possibly literally) give your left arm to do it.
Sorry for the tl;dr but all I mean is, if it helps OP, it's not necessarily about hating Shinji as a person but hating his failure to be the escapist fantasy character somebody wanted.

Still, I hope you've found more supportive and understanding friends now, OP. I know you can't just "get over it", but I do hope that your future is, or will, look better than your past.

I hope it helps you OP. And you're not whiny. Depression has a strange hold on some people but it's hard to see the light. The thing I liked most about it is that the people closest to him never gave up on trying to help him. In the end though, it was his /choice/ that made him decide to fix/work through his (Anno's) depression.
no subject
In the movies, it's so much better. There is more depth to him, and I can relate, understand and feel his struggle much more.
Really, there are a few people out there who just don't like his characterization because of the crappy way they set Shinji up. It was plainly poorly done in the old anime.

When I was first into NGE (at the age of 14), I was, admittedly, unable to truly understand what Shinji was going through and also kinda had the "why isn't he finally snapping out of it" mindset, but a few years later, at around 17 or 18, I was hit with depression for the first time in my life and could finally see and understand.
I had bouts of depression for a few years and they're not here anymore (though they might resurface in the future), but I wouldn't ever judge anyone for "not snapping out of it". After feeling so incredibly numb and tired of it all and realizing that it's impossible to do so, there's just no way I could.
I wish your friends could understand it as well, but admittedly, it is quite difficult to empathize when you have no clue what depression is like.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)I'm referring to the Original series just so you know. Never seen the Rebuild movies.
Also I can sort of relate in that I've come across a different fictional character who was almost exactly like me. It's really painful and kinda freaky. It was like having to relive all that old crap you thought you left behind. But in a way it was sort of a relief. Does that make sense OP?

The poor kid has a million problems, and still has more balls than half the cast. On the TV show he keeps risking his life to protect others, even though no one protects him - the few who try are lousy at it.
Anon, I think Shinji is badass for fighting his issues and still going on with life, and if you're like him, you're badass too.
And those friends don't even deserve your thoughts.
