I think this explanation makes a lot of sense actually. I personally like Shinji, but it is hard to watch someone shut down. And when it's the main character of a show it makes sense that a lot of people would be irritated by the show's insistence on drawing people's attention back the realities of war and its effect on the heroes of said war. Especially when those heroes are kids.

It's funny though- Evangelion hasn't ever really been strictly a mecha show, it just happens to use mecha as part of the story. If that makes sense. Basically, I don't think Anno ever intended it to be just another big robot show where the focus was the piloting; it always struck me that he was focusing more on the characters and how they responded to being thrust in that position.
