I never disliked Shinji. I read the manga first and was able to really sympathize with him. But most people go by animeversion (which I've only watched much later) and I can kinda get why they find him annoying there. It's just hard to watch and it feels like he's practically shouting and panicking all the time. Don't get me wrong, I can understand perfectly with all the facts given, it's realistic that he's struggling. He's just a 14-year-old boy who has no mother, was abandoned by his father, is used and alone, feels like nobody understands him and has to fight under extremely difficult circumstances etc... but as a comparison, my sister once watched the episode where Asuka flips out in german and I was barely able to stand it because I hated how the german Asuka (who has an IMO very annoying voice) sounded when she screamed around. It's like how I LOVED Grave of the Fireflies but my father only stated that the whining of the little girl was annoying >.>

Nevertheless, I guess most people who really dislike or hate Shinji just can't understand him and those people do seem a bit shallow to me. It's not easy to deal with this, but if a friend is suffering from depression or the likes, you should try to help or empathize with them... or you're not really a friend after all.

I did try to read the manga at one point, actually, because one friend insisted he was TOTALLY SO MUCH BETTER in the manga. I really couldn't grok him, there. He just seemed Angry and pointlessly aggressive. The anime version is more passive aggressive, which unfortunately makes him a lot closer to me. When you're in a situation where expressed anger is going to hurt you more than it's ever going to help, you learn the bad habit of never being openly angry.

I don't really blame anyone for disliking Shinji as a character. These are not exactly great personality traits. But I think I might have figured the difference between People You Hang Out With Just For Fun and Close Friends You'd Give Your Right Arm For a decade sooner than I did, if I'd known exactly why my friends back then hated Shinji so much.

I'm glad I stopped reading the manga, anyway. Not that it's a bad series or anything (it's not), but if I'd read up to the First Appearance of Kaworu without knowing to skip it, it would have hit one of my squicks/triggers something fierce. cats and medication are my therapy, no harm to cats plz
