Well, yes. This is true. Depression, or any mental illness, is just that, an illness. Sufferers needs treatment, understanding and support, but it can be hard being that support. After a while, some friends can't take it any more (especially if they have been brought up with the 'snap yourself out of it' mindset) and just... drift away. Not saying that it's good or right, but to be fair, some people with MI can be quite difficult to deal with. You can feel sympathy for their illness and what they must go through without necessarily wanting to (or even being able to) spend all your own emotional spoons trying to keep them afloat.

Completely true. One of the things that was hardest for me to learn, for the longest time, was that there are different kinds of friends. Or really, a friend spectrum.

At one end, there are friends that give you emotional support, send cards or call when you're in the hospital, sit up with you all night when you're at your worst, etc. At the other end, there's people you can hang out with and have fun but the answer to "hey, how are you doing?" is going to be "GREAT! :D :D" without any details, even if life sucks. Most people fall somewhere between, but you've got to know where they are on the spectrum, and not expect more from them than what's reasonable for where they stand. And even at the most extreme Close Friend end, people have boundaries. Self-sacrifice is never an obligation.

Rewind to 14-15, and I had NO FUCKING CLUE about any of that. Abusive household was an isolating household. I just thought, Friends Are Friends, right? I think if I'd known the Hated Shinji was like me, and realized the reasons why, I might've been able to figure out some of this without as much trial and error. Better all around for everyone involved.
