Actually, I think the fact that he refused to read the lines is kind of stupidly unprofessional. There's an implication there that he knows what's better for the story and/or character than the writers, which I think is pretty presumptuous.

Also, um...sometimes characters do things that you don't personally agree with or like. And that means...absolutely nothing because they aren't you they are characters. Sure, Cave forcing Caroline to download her personality has a nasty subtext. It's SUPPOSED TO have that subtext. Cave Johnson was obviously not a nice guy, pretty obviously a complete psychopath, and having him do that to the person who had been by his side through everything would have shown just how far off the deep end he'd gone.

And I also think that would have given the Caroline/GLaDOS storyline a better ending than just kind of..."and then Caroline was a GLaDOS." They don't really wrap it up very well, and I think that subplot is lacking for the loss of that scene.

...So, basically, I think I just lost respect for JK Simmons knowing about that. It's not up to him to determine what goes in the game and what doesn't.

This. I'd be on his side if the game were condoning rape and torture and treating it like a big joke, but the narrative doesn't do that. Cave is indubitably Not a Good Guy. I understand being upset by the lines and finding them difficult, but that's a different issue than refusing to do your job because you don't like what the writers have done. It's like he's saying you can't include this sort of material in any way that is critical of it and respectful, which is obviously stupid. The story might have been more effective with a more graphic or straightforward explanation of what happened to Caroline. It fleshes out GlaDOS and adds a layer of nuance and empathy to her.

I also wonder why he draws the line at overtones of rape, but was fine with all the other references to torture in Cave's dialogue.

Do we know it was a disagreement with the writing/characters and not an issue of not feeling comfortable doing the scene?

I roleplay online fairly often, but I draw the line at anything involving rape. Not because I think the characters wouldn't do it - some of them definitely would - but because I don't want to put myself in a mental position where I think like that. If I have to get into someone's head to write them properly, I can't even imagine how far into Cave's head he would have had to go to deliver the lines believably. I know I would do the same thing as JK did if I were in such a position.

I mostly agree with this, although I don't really lose respect for Simmons or feel he was unprofessional since I wasn't there, and don't know exactly when or how he raised his objections. While "refusing to read the lines" gives the image of him angrily throwing the script in disgust and stomping out, he could've easily simply admitted he felt uncomfortable with the lines, and suggested that they weren't fitting for the tone of the game, or whatever. Or maybe he really did storm out. I don't know, but without knowing the full situation I don't feel comfortable judging him for it, particularly if it's true that Caroline's voice actress also had a large amount of discomfort with the lines (because in that case, it wasn't just him either).

He might have been right though. considering we know the actor is of quality, it might have been more of a "Hey guys, this is def coming across as really, really dark, and that's obviously not the intention for this game" more than "I don't care what you paid me, I'm not reading this trash!"

As I recall, the creators ultimately agreed. Actor input into a character is often encouraged in media.
