I always felt nauseous down in the Early Aperture. I remember starting to miss Glados, badly, because everything was dark and depressing and I expect I'd have a horrible reaction to the mold and acetone lake if I was actually there. I started missing Glados, and Cave Johnson's spew of abuse to everyone around him is horrible (if kind of amusing on the surface). I just wanted to get back up to the surface already so I could test in Glados's old chambers again.

But yeah. Cave Johnson is a shit, and I'm really glad JK Simmons refused to read those lines. I might have needed to pause and walk away if I'd had to hear Caroline's horrified protests to Cave's growling insistance. As it is, the 'forcing her to be an OS' is rather subtly done and I can at least deal with it.

"I'd have a horrible reaction to the mold and acetone lake if I was actually there."

I thought the same. The level of unsanitary conditions down there freaked me out on its own. Not to mention that the gels are dangerous too and have been in storage for ages, and Chell gets covered in those a lot, I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up coughing a lung later in her life ._.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad they didn't put that into the game.

But having Caroline as an unwilling participant sort of explains why Glados is so psychotic.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
This. In my headcanon the scene still happened.

Not for any joy in the concept, but because it makes perfect sense and explains the character. Why would somebody happy and willing start out with an all-encompassing hatred that activates in picoseconds?

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Cave Johnson mentioned early on that Caroline wouldn't want to be implanted in an A.I. I took from that that since she was implanted anyway and went murder-maniac meant she really didn't like the idea after all. But it did pretty much break my heart. I... kinda wish they'd kept the lines, but, uh, I understand why others wouldn't.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't listened to them yet but from the information in the secret it seems like the lines crossed the "dark comedy" line and went straight into "oh shit really not funny" territory, so I agree with taking them out.
But I agree that it was already kind of implied that Caroline was converted pretty much unwillingly.

I gained a lot of respect for JK Simmons when I found out why he objected to recording those lines. I mean, obviously I respected him to begin with because he's J. Jonah Jameson, but this just cemented it.

Personally, I can see an argument for including the lines, but at the same time I think having something so disturbing and so reminiscent of rape would probably leave too bad a taste in my mouth for me to really get back into the silly comedy aspect of the game. Portal can be pretty dark already, but I feel like that'd be crossing a threshold best left uncrossed.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
This. What I like about Portal is that even for all the dark horrible things GLaDOS did there's still that element of comedy and humor that makes the game so enjoyable. I hated the Aperture basement; the only thing I liked was hearing Cave ramble on about things. After already having Wheatley betray Chell, I would have been pretty mad if they painted Cave Johnson to look like a heartless jerk too.

Plus hearing GLaDOS scream when she was taken out of her chassis was enough nightmare fuel for me. I don't want to think about what happened to Caroline.

I guess I should check this dialogue out. I always found the storyline revealed in the old-aperture section pretty sickening, but that's partly the reason it's my favourite part of the game.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Cave Johnson's talking about picking up homeless people and giving them cancer in order to perform radical experiments on them and his forcing his own employees to submit to dangerous tests was okay, but when he downloaded Caroline against her will, this was beyond the pale? Cave Johnson is a monster.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between implying something, or even discussing it, and portraying it viscerally. The refuge in audacity dark comedy elements that were kept would have been way over the top if they had been more detailed and included the cries of the victims.

Actually, I think the fact that he refused to read the lines is kind of stupidly unprofessional. There's an implication there that he knows what's better for the story and/or character than the writers, which I think is pretty presumptuous.

Also, um...sometimes characters do things that you don't personally agree with or like. And that means...absolutely nothing because they aren't you they are characters. Sure, Cave forcing Caroline to download her personality has a nasty subtext. It's SUPPOSED TO have that subtext. Cave Johnson was obviously not a nice guy, pretty obviously a complete psychopath, and having him do that to the person who had been by his side through everything would have shown just how far off the deep end he'd gone.

And I also think that would have given the Caroline/GLaDOS storyline a better ending than just kind of..."and then Caroline was a GLaDOS." They don't really wrap it up very well, and I think that subplot is lacking for the loss of that scene.

...So, basically, I think I just lost respect for JK Simmons knowing about that. It's not up to him to determine what goes in the game and what doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'd be on his side if the game were condoning rape and torture and treating it like a big joke, but the narrative doesn't do that. Cave is indubitably Not a Good Guy. I understand being upset by the lines and finding them difficult, but that's a different issue than refusing to do your job because you don't like what the writers have done. It's like he's saying you can't include this sort of material in any way that is critical of it and respectful, which is obviously stupid. The story might have been more effective with a more graphic or straightforward explanation of what happened to Caroline. It fleshes out GlaDOS and adds a layer of nuance and empathy to her.

I also wonder why he draws the line at overtones of rape, but was fine with all the other references to torture in Cave's dialogue.

I was actually really surprised when I heard the lines. They don't sound very...emotional. I kinda wonder if there were more emotional takes, but the team didn't put the in the game files because they thought it was too much. (Or maybe Ellen herself couldn't get the right tone right because the lines made her uncomfortable....IDK.)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I was thoroughly creeped out by what Cave said after the lemon speech and the horrible implications there, I'm not sure I could've finished the game had I actually heard the scene acted out. Heck, the lemon speech creeped me out the more I thought about it. That whole section is really terrifying if you let all the implications sink in. I mean, I love dark humor and I definitely laughed when I played those parts, but damn it's horrifying.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am just intensely grateful to Simmons for refusing to record his half of the lines and that that part didn't make it into the game. Can you imagine the shit storm if it had?

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think a LOT of people get uncomfortable in that part of Portal 2, but for me to creepy immersion is kind of part of the appeal.

But anyways, I think that GLaDOS' not having wanted to become an AI was to help make her more sympathetic, along with her acting a bit more "human" once she'd been disconnected from all the "voices" and turned into potaDOS.

Valve mentioned that they hadn't originally planned to develop her so much, but when they just made her a jerk potato the play testers wanted to yank her off the gun and throw her into the lake. XD

[identity profile] chibifier.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
like some peole before me I felt that the old aperture part was supposed to make you feel like that.

what I don't get is how an actor can refuse recording lines that "feel like rape", when that's exactly what it is. Putting someones mind into a machine without their consent IS a form of violation of body and soul. So why the hell not go through with it??

[identity profile] tiger-pause.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I read about that last night. It freaked me out and I haven't even played the games. Kind of want to watch a playthrough now tho.

[identity profile] modmoviegirl.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know what HIS lines were, that he refused to read? Is there a script somewhere? I know the context and what they're about, but I really want to read the words.

If it makes you feel better....

Simmon's couldn't have "refused to record[ed] his lines" because at that point Cave Johnson would have been dead.

There's the mythos built up about him being the one to force Caroline into GladOS. The actual lines from the game are along the lines that 1) she is to take over in the case of his death (whether she wants to or not, due to self doubt) and a throwaway line about "hell, put her into the computer"

Somewhere along the line, some loonie at Aperture got the idea that "put her into the computer" and "Whether she wants to or not" were part of the same sentence. But her protests of "Sir, I don't want this" do not sound like a crying VA, or someone faced with a life-destroying scenario. They're simply too controlled, especially in a game that took great care in ensuring the characters sound realistic (Johnson's descent into insanity is a good case in point)
