I say this in all seriousness: thank you for opening my eyes. My boyfriend loves to tease me about my fandom activities and sometimes my friends downright insult me (unintentionally, but still).

They're all crazy about sports in some way, and it's not like they're DOING sports, they just watch it and then get their panties in a twist over how someone kicked a ball or drove a car and they analyze the fuck out of the players and gossip.

It never occurred to me to call them out on this double standard, because love of sports is all over the place and considered normal. Still it is fandom and now I finally have good arguments. Thx!

Haha...I did actually use the whole passion of sports fans to explain to my boyfriend once why it is that ship wars can get out of hand sometimes. Even though it's kind of a flawed allegory, I think it made a little more sense to him at that point.
