Huh? Dumbledore being gay ring a bell to you?

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
dumbledore was not textually gay in the books, and after ONE failed romance (that again, was never explicitly mentioned as a romance) he never had another relationship again. that's not exactly a shining example of pro-gay/non-heteronormativity.

DA

Whether or not it was in books or not is irrelevant considering that Meran_Flash wasn't just referring to the books but 'Rowling's world'.

"...and after ONE failed romance (that again, was never explicitly mentioned as a romance) he never had another relationship again. that's not exactly a shining example of pro-gay/non-heteronormativity."

Actually, she stated that he was in love so most likely it was a romance. And why does it matter if he never sought out another relationship again, he still was in one. Meran_Flash commented that it was heternormative world, and obviously with Dumbledore's situation that isn't true.

Dear anon,

Gay people still exist in societies dominated by heteronormativity. You're talking to one.

Sincerely,

me.

SMH at you.

If JKR was really under the heteronormative mindset then Dumbledore wouldn't be gay.

lrn2 sociological definitions, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Because I'm under the impression that you don't know what it means.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
idt meran_flash is the one who doesn't know what it means

"Heteronormativity is the cultural bias in favor of opposite-sex relationships of a sexual nature, and against same-sex relationships of a sexual nature."

Read the article where she talks about it: http://gallery.the-leaky-cauldron.org/picture/207262

"The underrepresentation of same-sex couples in advertising and entertainment media."

And if you are only focusing on this, which people pretty much do, then she says there are more but she doesn't get into because she is focus on talking about Dumbledore.

Ohhhh poor baby.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
it was never explicitly mentioned in the BOOKS. dumbledore was 100% written as basically non-romantic non-sexual, rowling going "oh btw i always thought of him as gay" doesn't make that relationship and his orientation textual.

also it's not really confirmed even BY jkr outside the books that it was a relationship beyond friendship. so essentially we have "young man is attracted to another boy, who turns out to be evil, then he never has another relationship and is portrayed as eccentric non-sexual until he dies." never seen THAT before. what a gay role model omg thank you jkr.

but lmao that you apparently think "heteronormative" means "everyone is straight"

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
SA-- ugh I keep saying "never has another relationship" but what i mean is "never apparently pursues another relationship" since i believe dumbledore/grindelwald was unrequited

so basically he never has an actual romantic relationship his entire long long life

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
We're talking about her world from the beginning, which goes beyond the books. Please keep up before you get yourself in a rage.

"also it's not really confirmed even BY jkr outside the books that it was a relationship beyond friendship."

Yes, she does. http://gallery.the-leaky-cauldron.org/picture/207262

"Heteronormativity is the cultural bias in favor of opposite-sex relationships of a sexual nature, and against same-sex relationships of a sexual nature."

No, it means she wouldn't have bothered because she would have been in this mindset.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
after ONE failed romance (that again, was never explicitly mentioned as a romance) he never had another relationship again

Not to mention the whole thing where his failed romance nearly lured him into EVIL and he spent the rest of his life basically doing penance for it. That's such a painfully homophobic trope.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would say that it falls more under the Love Makes You Evil trope then homophobic trope.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA-- maybe, but when paired with celibate gay and dead gay tropes*, it definitely becomes part of the trend of similar homophobic tropes.

(*i debated on including dead gay trope b/c so many die in hp, but since the ONLY gay character in the series dies, i'm thinking it counts.)

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! It might not if they'd only read the books.
