Pottermore spoilers

McGonagall actually kept her name when she got married to a man she met while she was working at the Ministry. After he died three years later (without the couple having any children) she went to teach at Hogwarts

Before, she was in love with a Muggle guy but when she realized that getting married to him would mean rejecting a job offer from the Ministry and giving up her magic (her witch mother married a Muggle guy too, and had to give up magic for the sake of protecting the statue of secrecy) she couldn't go through with it, so she broke it off with him and decided to take the job at the Ministry.

But I guess since none of that was in the books it doesn't count.

No, she married him when she was already teaching at Hogwarts.

I'd be a bit happier about that if it were in the books, but ngl, finding that out about McGonagall made me love her even more than I already did.

... Seamus's dad is a muggle. Hermione's parents are muggles. And they're still allowed to be told about magic stuff. Someone please tell me that this discrepancy is because the statute of secrecy specifics got changed in the intervening years. JK is so fucking good at fucking up her own stated canon, sweartagod.

No, anon got it wrong. McGonagall's mother just choose not tell her minister husband until after McGonagall was born and started to display magic. (Which ruined her husband's trust in her, but that didn't mean he stopped loving her).
