On that last bit...I'm a fan of spouses sharing a last name, because I worked in a married student housing office for most of my college career, with a lot of study abroad students who had different last names from their spouses, and it's a nightmare for record keeping. That being said, I don't think women should automatically be the one to change their name. I think the couple should decide based on what last name sounds better with their first names.

(Er, not that I'm advocating forcing anyone to change their name if they don't want to)

I'll just be over here, missing the point of the secret...

Well, in regards to the Trio, we don't know, exactly, when they had children. The epilogue was "19 years later," I believe, and since you must be eleven to get into Hogwarts (and James had already been there for a year, if I remember correctly) at least 7-8 years had to have passed before any of them had kids.

If you are referring to James and Lily, and possibly even Narcissia and Lucius, well...maybe the wizarding world's values were different back then? And with the pureblood families like the Malfoys, I'd expect them to encourage couples to marry and have children ASAP for pureblood heirs and things.

It could be a lot of reasons, some of which less involved than the one's I suggested, but it's an interesting point.

It's all about the kids with Rowling...

You know I finally figured out what bothers me about the epilogue. I couldn't care less how many kids they'll have and what ridiculous names they'll have. I wanted to know if Harry became an auror. If Hermione is some kickass magic expert. What is Ron doing? Did they do anything interesting? :/

About the names...isn't it normal for a woman in Britain to change her name to her husbands? That didn't seem weird to me.

While I'm not a huge fan of people having kids young, it makes sense in a way that people (like James and Lily) were getting married right out of Hogwarts and having kids. There was a war going on and that is sometimes the norm in such circumstances. People are faced with their morality and they pair up and procreate. (At least this is my opinion, a bit like our Baby Boomer generation.)

And I don't think that makes them terrible role models at all. They were adults, choosing to make an important life decision.

As for the woman taking the man's last name, there is nothing wrong with that. Couples usually talk about it before they get married and come to a decision that meets their own needs. Some women choose to take the name while others don't. Not a big deal. Contrary to what some believe, it doesn't make you any more progressive to keep your maiden name, it all about what you prefer.

I imagine for the older wizards who had to live through the first wizarding war it was a bit of a baby boom, exactly like what happens after rl wars such as WW1 and II. And perhaps also re marrying young it was a case of they were terrified of dying without letting their SO know how much they feel?

I agree to an extent. I don't think that having children young or changing your last name makes you a bad role-model, but a bit of variety would be nice. I think JKR said Luna had kids at a later age than the trio, didn't she?

What gets to me is that wizards seem to live so much longer than muggles, so if you got married that early, you'd kind of be stuck with whoever for ages, barring divorce, etc.

Romance was never the most important thing to the HP characters, because more important stuff was going on. You know, like the events of the books. It was present but to the side, for both the boys and the girls. Settling down to a nice, happy family is a symbol of peace and happiness in a book about war and dying.
See, if more than a handful of pages had been dedicated to the time post-series maybe I'd look at this secret with something other than rolling eyes. Because I can see the point, that variety and diversity of families makes the setting more realistic and inclusive...but that's not what Harry Potter was even about. Everything you're complaining about came up in what was basically a slightly longer version of "and they all lived Happily Ever After."

[identity profile] classic-mold137.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I just realized in my head canon they got married young because of the war and a sense that it was either now or never.

"And why do all women change their last name?"

McGonagall was married and never changed her last name (as she thought herself a bit of a feminist).

"Why do they all have to get hitch/have babies so young?"

Not all characters married young and and babies. Luna Lovegood's character married later in life and Ron and Hermione wanted a bit before starting a family.

Pottermore spoilers

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
McGonagall actually kept her name when she got married to a man she met while she was working at the Ministry. After he died three years later (without the couple having any children) she went to teach at Hogwarts

Before, she was in love with a Muggle guy but when she realized that getting married to him would mean rejecting a job offer from the Ministry and giving up her magic (her witch mother married a Muggle guy too, and had to give up magic for the sake of protecting the statue of secrecy) she couldn't go through with it, so she broke it off with him and decided to take the job at the Ministry.

But I guess since none of that was in the books it doesn't count.

Remember this is JK's ideal ending for them, kinda like how Jane Austen wished for her characters to have the happy endings she didn't have. It isn't necessarily realistic.

[identity profile] uptown-side.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I also think a lot the name changing had to do with the drama of revealing that Sirius is related to pretty much EVERY DEATH EATER EVER, and Bellatrix, Narcissa and Tonks' mom Andromeda are all sisters.

The young ages of Harry's parents weirded me out at first but, like others have said, during a time of war many people choose to marry and have children ASAP.

[identity profile] clamwings.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
McGonagall didn't change her last name...

But when your in the midst of war, wouldn't you want to consumate your love sooner rather than later? Though IA they were a little young for kids. But each to their own?

Excuse me if this has already been said

[identity profile] tehanu-chan.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember where I read that in times of war people tend to have family at a young age, you know, just in case... So that was the explanation for me...
In regards of the last name, I believe it's just an old tradition that I hope by the time Hermione got married fade away. In my mum's generation women usually took their husbands' last name, but my mum always refused (she married 25 years ago).

[identity profile] azaelers.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's explicitly stated in the books (by Molly, IRRC) that during the first War, people got married and had kids sooner than usual because they never knew what day would be their last.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
sorry. I can't get past the misspelling of ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I like the people who are bringing up McGonagall and Dumbledore. Oh, one woman who didn't change her name, and one gay guy. Well, I guess that's fine then. Our work here is done. Come on, feminism, time to go home. We're unneeded in a world where one gay guy exists.
