I liked them being so young, because it really helps get across this idea of an entire generation, hardly more than children, making rash decisions out of the desperate fear that they might not live much longer anyway. As I've always felt there was a very WWII-feel to the anecdotes of the Marauders Era, and as a lot of quickie and too-young marriages DO happen in wartime, especially in a more traditional society, I tend to find the idea of a generation grown up too fast and subsequently largely destroyed very poignant (also, if Lupin was mid-50's-plus, his getting together with Tonks really was indefensibly gross). In my fanon, there quite a few other orphans in Harry's year, along with kids from broken homes.

As regards to the changing names issue, well, JKR, does write wizarding society as relatively socially conservative and decades behind the times anyway, so it fits, IMO. I guess though, considering I'd personally choose to take my husband's name if I ever get married (a combination of liking the tradition and having a bad relationship with my father's side of the family) I'm not especially sensitive to the issue.

Why do you like the tradition?

Some people are just traditional? It seems to me that this sort of thing should be an individual choice, with NEITHER option being questioned or looked down upon.
