I don't blame you. I'm so sick of vampires and everyone trying to one-up Meyer or write vampires the right way or whatever. They weren't that interesting to begin with.

Why do discussions of vampires always come back to Twilight? You do realize that of the three series referenced in the secret, Twilight is the most recent, right? How is it one-upping Meyer to write a book about vampires and publish it a decade before Twilight?

Buffy/Angel were pre-Meyer, and so was Blade. The Vampire Chronicles, Salem's Lot, I am Legend, and (oh, yeah) Dracula were all decades pre-Twilight. Twilight is one in a long, long, long series of vampire-based media, because the vampire legend is flexible and fascinating. Twilight isn't the first book to romanticize vampires, it's not the first to have a tortured-hero vampire who hates his nature or a helpless human love interest, and it's certainly not the first to be poorly written. So why is it always about Twilight?

Apologies for being unclear.

I was thinking more along the lines of bad Twilight knock-offs that were published around the time the first movie came out, not the series those shows in the secret were based off of. When I said "one-up" I was referring to people who saw how much money Meyer was making during the craze and wanted to make some quick money by coming up with similar works. I'm not a Twilight fan by any means, but some days I wonder if Twilight never became so popular, would the True Blood or Vampire Diaries TV series ever have been produced? Or movies like the Let the Right One In and Fright Night remakes and new movies like Daybreakers?

I'm not saying all the new vampire media out there now is bad. I just think Twilight was what initiated the recent craze about vampires to begin with since it got so insanely popular. That said, at the moment I'm tired of hearing about media with vampires in it regardless of their portrayal.

And I apologize for being kind of dickish. I love vampires and this is clearly a pet-peeve of mine. People like the OP make me sad because I don't want people to stop publishing new vampire fiction out of fear of Twilight-backlash, when Twilight is seriously such a flash-in-the-pan I doubt anyone will even remember it 5 years from now.
