Seriously.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Original things can be done with vampires. Original things are done with overworn subjects all the time.

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes.
I've never been a big fan of vampires, but the whole fantasy section of bookstores is full of it.
It seems that all that's left are WoW books...

People don't go for things like vampires, zombies, pirates, ninjas or whatever else because they're looking for something %100 original. They found a theme they like and they're exploring it. Things that try to be totally new can usually be related to things that already exist in any case: lots of monsters people come up with have vampiric traits.

Let your friend enjoy her writing. The market is over saturated, so it probably won't go anywhere, but she could get lucky.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That is why I quit writing about vampires even though I love them. I hate the new trend and have stayed far away from it. But it really sucks because vampires have always been a popular topic, it's just that right this second the market is ridiculously oversaturated by everybody trying to cash in on vampires being the current hotness.
But it's unfair to say your friend is being unoriginal by simply having an idea for a story that involves vampires. There's always a shit-ton of romantic comedies but if somebody says "I have an idea for a light-hearted romance story" I don't automatically write it off because that's very, very general. So is "story that involves vampires."
My suggestion to your friend is to write it and put it away for a while and wait until the hype dies down so it won't be lost in a sea of vampire YA novels.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mine more vampire stories if people would write something good about vampires.

I love vampire/supernatural stories, but I hate most of the vampire related media that is popular right now

Eh, just because it's about vampires doesn't mean it has to suck or can't be done in a (semi-)original way. I was pleasantly surprised by Maria Headley's "Queen of Kings", for example, despite it's rather stupid premise.

I think the market is oversaturated with vampire-romances along the lines of "She meets a dark, oh so mysterious stranger;he is vampire, can their love survive, blablabla", rather than vampire stories in general.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, Marceline keeps my love for vampires alive (or undead?) despite the over-saturation in pop culture.

And who cares if they're "overdone" anyway? How do you know your friend doesn't have a unique take on the monsters? By the time your friend is done the vampire romance novel craze may even die down a bit too.

yeah, what you mean is that subject is overexposed right now. it's possible for a talented writer to be original, no matter what the subject.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I love vampire fiction. I just don't like vampire ROMANCE, which seems to be all that's on the market right now. I wish there were more books/movies where vampires were bloodthirsty instead of in love with mortals.

Just because your friend is writing about vampires doesn't mean s/he doesn't have an interesting concept in mind. It may not be 100% original, but that doesn't mean she can't produce an interesting story.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What a shitty friend you are.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell her to wait a few years (or a decade) for the craze to die down a bit. You never know, she might actually have a good idea.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha I feel the same. Then again I've never liked vampires much anyway.

[identity profile] vazira.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Most subjects are no longer 'original'. And I don't really think it matters, as it's not the subject but how it's done that makes it good or bad. How it's executed. I'd gladly read any over-used cliché if it were done right.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you. I'm so sick of vampires and everyone trying to one-up Meyer or write vampires the right way or whatever. They weren't that interesting to begin with.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh there's lots of things that can be done with vampires. I'd love a vampire story that wasn't primarily romance oriented or gore fests. It can be done.
ext_52635: (Default)

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
To me vampires aren't over done. Stories with romantic vampires and vampiric societies are over done. True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Being Human, Twilight all have either romantic vampires and vampiric societies or even both that it leads to the whole concept being boring.

However, a single vampire with no vampiric society ties like the Fright Night remake has out now? Yeah, that's rare these days and something that I like.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what I worried about. I've started my own vampire novel years ago, before Twilight got so damn huge, bringing all the YA vampire stories with it. Now I'm worried I'll never get published because 1)like you said, the market is full of them right now and 2)it isn't a modern, teen romance vampire story. It takes place in the Middle Ages. There's a romance, yes, but not til the very end. It's more about growing up and learning to think for yourself. I'm afraid no one will want to read it now :(

You...sound like kind of a dick and stupidly closed-minded.

Because, of course, all vampire stories are exactly like those three (which is, when I last checked, not a very large number) in your secret.

And also, way to go having faith in your friend that she could come up with somewhere new to take the concept.

[identity profile] tw-31988.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Good storyline can be done with vampires. It's just that people do the same storyline over and over.

we can stop with the 'two vampires fighting for the love of a small town girl' storyline tho...

that said. TVD started like that but it's evolve into something else with Klaus and the whole thing. i still roll my eyes when they get all Teen drama mode but irl the other storylines.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This saddens me because back in 2001 when I discovered a love for vampires only a small group of people cared about them. I had a story in the back of my mind that I was planning to write once I was confident in my writing and had learned everything I needed to be a writer. Now that I have I can't go back to that story anymore.

What's worse is that the vampires in my story were old school vampires with fangs and bloodlust. They didn't sparkle in the sun, they burned. And most of them were badass mother F killers.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
i cannot wait for this phenomenon to be over

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I find vampires interesting, I'm sick of them too... Too much pop culture is saturated with vamps, but it looks to be dying down and being replaced with superheros. XD Tell her to write about characters with super powers.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can't blame you. With how it is right now, it just feels like everyone's trying to out-hipster each other to 'bring vampires back to what they were!'

they were kinda lame to begin with :|
