First of all, if I thought the things I talk about in fandom were real, I wouldn't be here typing this comment, because friends or family would have had me institutionalized.

As for your questions about why people whine about ships and write meta and analyze fictional media? Because it's fun. Now, granted, it takes all types and one person's hobby is another's torture, but the point stands. I engage in fandom for those reasons because I have fun doing it.

But also, fandom (even intense, long-term involvement therein) and "real" life aren't mutually exclusive. This past summer, I had an out-of-town internship, and ended up rooming with a friend of mine I met through fandom. Tomorrow, I'm having lunch with a friend I met through fandom. And what's more, there are plenty of people not involved in fandom who think about those things (for instance, people who study literature).
