Then it would completely fuck up the entire legend. The whole point is that she cheats and goes off with Lancelot.

Don't quote me on this because I'm far from an expert, but I've read that in the earliest versions of the legend there was no Lancelot, and thus no cheating, that it was just straight up Arthur/Guinevere OTP.

This is correct. There are 1400-1500 years of Arthurian legends and the first half Lancelot didn't even exist. And I just find it funny how some people are all 'omg, it has to happen' when they've changed so many things on the show already. Starting with Merlin himself.
