Yes, because it seems like they will simply kill Lancelot off and solve the love triangle that way. Brilliant writing. Not.

[identity profile] karate0kat.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. This show has changed so much about the legend, the set up is completely different on the show, and yet somehow some people can't fathom how that part might also be different.

Explain to me why Gwen would cheat with Lancelot in this version? I admit she has feelings for both men and for some people that's probably enough to prove she'll hop in the sack with Lancy at some point. But really? She has to fight to be with Arthur. She could be with Lancelot at any point if she wanted. There are no class taboos or political shenanigans to worry about. Tell me what's supposed to happen to make Gwen fight to be with Arthur against all the odds, marry him, and then decide 'just kidding I really wanna bone the other guy'.

Explain to me how she has to fight to be with Arthur. He'll do whatever he wants and she'll reap the rewards.

Also, feelings change. Who's the say 20 years in the future she and Arthur don't feel the same as they do now?

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
This. The Guinevere who cheats on Arthur in the legend never really loved Arthur except as her king and does it because she was never emotionally mature and selfless enough to be a good queen. Gwen has more integrity than that, and I'm pretty sure this version of the story isn't supposed to end as a tragedy with Guinevere's infidelity or anything else as the beginning of the kingdom's downfall.

I just like her relationship with Lancelot more...I know that Arthur/Gwen is what will be the endgame in the show, but there was no development for the relationship and I don't buy it. Though I don't think there is a single version of the legend where I liked Arthur/Gwen...

[identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm convinced that someone will put a spell on her that will make her have an affair with Lancelot.

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
...I think I would actually....really like that. Heheh.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
LOL Same here. The writers do love their enchantments after all.

[identity profile] classic-mold137.livejournal.com 2011-08-20 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I'll kinda be upset if she doesn't cheat with Lancelot because I feel like they've abandoned a natural characterization progression about certain things in order to follow some of the legend plots- particularly evil Morgana and what I saw as rushed A/G in Season 2- and those choices by the writers/producers will be less justified in my eyes if they just decide "nah, we're not really fussed about following the legends after all". /forever bitter about Morgana

Because the writers are pansies and we won't get to see it, but since they said the show is a prequel to the legends, she'll cheat after the final credits roll. I'd stake my life on it.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP. The producers said as much.

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Then it would completely fuck up the entire legend. The whole point is that she cheats and goes off with Lancelot.

I think circumstances will change. Arthur will focus on Camelot to the exclusion of the people he's close to. I would be sad for Gwen if she didn't go with Lancelot. Bradley has said as much, to Arthur, Camelot comes first and with Lancelot there's Gwen. And Angel has said that Lancelot is best for Gwen and she's with Arthur because Lancelot is not around. I worry that the writers will chicken out and not go the Gwen/Lance route, but I sincerely hope they do because otherwise I don't see how those characters are going to be happy.

Arguably, Arthur fathering Mordred with Morgana/Morgause is just as central to the legends (if not more so) as Guinevere cheating with Lancelot. And since they didn't do the former, there's no reason they'll do the latter.

Plus, (if memory serves) the Legendary Arthur not only KNEW about Guinevere/Lancelot's affair, but had a "don't ask, don't tell" policy about it. It was going on right under his nose, and he just let it happen. Unless they pull another Morgana and screw over the character entirely, the characterization of Arthur on "Merlin" just wouldn't let that happen. It was clear enough at the end of the Gwaine episode that he gets jealous at the top of a hat.

Plus, hasn't Lancelot already given up on Gwen? He left of his own volition at the end of his centric-ep in Season 2. It would be weird if he went back on that now, as he pretty much seems to get off on being all noble and self-sacrificing. (And they'll probably kill him off just to drive the point home).

And I just can't see this Gwen cheating. At all.

I see the life you've staked, and I raise you one original Arthurian myth*.

Then again, from what I've seen of this show they don't seem to care about deviating from the original mythology, so who knows?

(*yes, I know there are SEVERAL original myths, but as far as I'm aware most -- if not all -- of them have Guinevere betraying Arthur for Lancelot.)

At this point I think it would be out of character for Gwen to cheat.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
so, in essence, this show is an AU of the legend of King Arthur? has all the character names but it's nothing like the legend at all?

way to go! fanfiction given LIFE!

Sure OP, sure.

Hey, I think this time Mordred is just his long-lost nephew, and Merlin will magic him nice so him and Arthur can fly the first rocket ship into space* and be a family again!

*It's pulled by unicorns.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-21 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know OP - as far the Arthurian myths go, there are different backgrounds for Mordred, including a few where he's not even related to Arthur [Granted, most of those are prior to the Lancelot-Grail cycle of the myths], so it's possible they're looking at those sources for what happened with him.

Because of that, I think it's pretty open game to what they'll do with her - most myths [mostly after the Lancelot-Grail cycle, iirc] have her having an affair with him - and honestly, it's one of the most famous aspects of the myths. Plus, they *have* pointed out she has feelings for both, and if she was just going to end up with Arthur, it would make more sense for them to have just written Lancelot as a crush, or simply not written that in at all.

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
They should go with the really early versions of the King Arthur legends and have Gwen have an affair with Mordred.

There's foretelling that she will, though, especially in the final episode of S3. There was Arthur/Gwen foretelling towards the end of S1 and then they pushed it full ball in S2, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they pushed Lancelot/Gwen in S4.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-22 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm far from disagreeing with you, OP, but I must say that if all the Js do absolutely nothing with the betrayal I will want to punch a producer in the mouth.

The others are right, in that they've already screwed up many other key points to the legend-- hell, I'm hard pressed to think of something they've gotten accurate (besides the names). But to non-mythos, Guinevere's betrayal is the thing everyone remembers. S2 had plenty of hints towards it, besides, so I'm pretty sure something is going to happen.

Yes, to be true to character, Gwen would never betray Arthur. But they've been about as true to character as they've been to the legend.

My prediction is that Gwen and Lance are going to be caught in a compromising position after agreeing that they can never be together (a la that Tristan and Isolde/Iseult movie) and Arthur's going to blow a casket. The effects of the betrayal still happen, but Gwen never actually betrayed him. Yaaay.
