I admit I don't understand when people get *angry* about it, but I don't see how meta, critical analysis, and even shipping are any different to the things students of literature do in academia. There are reasons why it's common in many countries to study literature at school. You can learn a great deal about the psychology of a culture, and the individuals in it, from fiction. Fiction *is* important. It's not just a load of meaningless stuff that isn't real. It's perhaps the closest thing we have to genuine universal consciousness. When you study fiction, you study the soul of a society. There's nothing more important, or more real, about a person than their dreams. The fantasies we create represent the unbridled essence of who we are.

...that's just my take on it. Each to their own.
