The idea that caring about stories, that analyzing them, that giving them a reality of their own, automatically means that we think that they're "real" in the same way that school and work and family are real, or are willing to reject our own world in favor of a fantasy... that's one of the most pervasive and annoying stereotypes about fandom. Yes, there are some people who take it too seriously, and they might get more attention because they're the loudest, but most of us make time and space for "real life" and the stories we love. Nowhere is it written that we can't have both.
If this doesn't appeal to you as a hobby? Fine. Nor is it written anywhere that you have to participate. But by strolling into a space filled with fans, and saying, or at least implying, that we are "pathetic" for caring about something just because it's "not real," you're deliberately trying to cause trouble, and if that's how you make your own fun, I think that makes us just a shade less pathetic than you.
